Find no1 piston and remove the spark plug. loosen of the cam shaft bearings to prevent valve damage when turning engine . Turn the engine over by hand until the no1 piston is coming up on exhaust stroke ( find this by placing your finger over no1 plug hole and turning the engine over until you feel pressure under the finger. Watch for the timing mark on the crank pulley /Sprocket. Once you have established that the piston is at TDC rotate the crank 360 degrees as this will now be the exhaust stroke . Watch carefully the exhaust rocker and the inlet rockers for no1 piston as it is coming up to TDC. you will see that the exhaust rocker will be coming up and at a point the inlet will start to go down IT is at this point when a bit of crank movement either way rocks the ex and inlet together ( valve overlap) with the crank on TDC that the cam shaft will be timed to the crankshaft

IN one of your comments you mentioned that it was a saab engine so I checked my reference books for saab and have this information for you.If it is a twin cam unit 1994-2003 the cam timing is by a tag on the inside of the bearing cap on the cam that lines up with a flat on the top of the cap (both shafts). Balance shafts have a notch on the shaft that line up with the notch on the back of the plate. If it is a v6 dohc the timing mark are by dots on the sprockets that line up with coloured links on the chains. ON a 2.0l turbo 2003-2011 dohc the keyis at thye 12oclock position (there is a dot on the front of the cam lobes and this will point towards each other at around the 1oclock and 11oclock poisiton for tdc with the piston. ON v8 2005-2009 the timing marks are on the sprocket face as a dot and will be facing down towards the crank which has a dot on the sprocket facing up at it. I hope that this has been some help and if you think saab is bad, think about audi that drives one cam from the back of the crank through a chain that drives the other cam through a belt at the front. You really have it easy.

How do i set the valve and cam timing on a 1984 honda 200r motorcycle?

XL500 XL250 XR600 XR90 All much the same Piston has to be top dead centre on compression stroke there is a mark on fly wheel as well, make sure you don't move it after setting it up. line cam up with valve case there are two horizontal lines on both sides of cam sprocket they face towards you then line it up with the top of engine case horizontal very important make sure the cam lobes are facing up so they won't be putting pressure on valves when tightened down if everything lined up and nothings moved put top on and bolt down. I forgot you got to loosen chain tensioner then retighten after bolted down, then turn engine over slowly couple of times to make sure every thing good and nothing catching or hitting then check valve clearance ex 0.08mm inlet 0.05

How can I remove the timing chain belt and sprocket.? Can I keep it exactly on time?

Put the engine in #1 cylinder at top dead center so the timing marks line up. If you don't move the crank or the cam without the chain installed you'll be ok

How to lline up timeing marks

on the crank there is a mark on the engine a mark its like a line on the backside of the engine and a spot on the crank sprocket on the top at the cam should have a hole in the center of the cam sprocket with a red line on the head top near valve cover it should line up properly or if you have 2 marks on the cam sprocket -- one on each side of the sprocket and on the engine side or cover should have 2 marks as well that line up do not take off the timing belt until you have all the marks properly lined up then you can remove the belt but do not turn over the engine without installing the new belt

I want to know the times for the timing chain for the 2002 nissan altima

There are 2 chains and 4 sprockets total.
Here is an image of the parts involved:
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/277876630/timing_chain_kit/showimage.html
The most important thing to do is first pull the sparkplugs, so you can easily turn the engine over by hand.
Then set the crankshaft to TDC, (top dead center), for cylinder #1,
The crank turns half the speed of the cams, so it comes up twice. You need to put it on the one for cylinder #1. Which you can verify with the cam cover off. The cam lobes need to be away from the valves at #1, but in contact with #3.
With the cam cover off, you should be able to also see the makes on the cam sprocket. I believe they line up with the top edge of the head. But you will be able to easily figure it out with the cam cover off. The chain probably has no marks on it. And the middle idler sprocket does not matter. Only the bottom crank sprocket and 2 camshaft sprockets matter. However, you make only have a bad tensioner or slipper. But replace the whole set if you do any chain. It is not worth having to do over again.

1998 4cyl.camry had a stuck valae due to bad gas{varnish}. removed valve cover, got valve unstuck. had to remove exhaust cam, but not the intake cam. need to reinstall and time exhaust cam. can not...

simple to figure that out . the key ways are always up on camshafts. it allows for them not to fall out when assembling the engine . so use the balancer to determine tdc (top dead center on cyl one) and make sure both keys are straight up . (just loosen the cam retainer nuts and look to see what set of marks they line up with and dont forget t re-torque them to factory specs somewhere between 22 and 28 ft lbs but not a lot more) , google the specs up to be sure

Remove tappet cover and turn engine till the lobes on the cam shaft at no.1 cylinder are facing upwards and not pushing on the lifters. The cam gear has a little line on the side of it near one of the teeth that should line up with the top edge of the cylinder head.Get no.1 piston at TDC (top dead center) and check that the crank gear mark lines up with the marks on the plastic cam belt cover.Fit belt turn engine and check marks again.

Fitting cam shafts on Volvo 850se 1994 20v 2ltr

There is a special tool that mechanics use for the alignment of the camshaft pullys. It is basically an angle iron straight edge that fit exactly into the camshft grooves.. Just make sure that the engine 's first cylinder is at the top. (Top dead center) before fitting the cam(s) into place.

Nissan navara 1986 2.4L petrol timing problem

For timing, on 1981 and later 4 cyl engines (from the Haynes manual):
1. Turn camshaft so both valves for #1 cylinder are closed, and turn the crankshaft so #1 piston is at top dead center (woodruff key should be pointing up).
2. Engage the camshaft sprocket (with stamped numbers facing out) into the timing chain, and install the chain around the crankshaft sprocket. The bright links on the chain should be aligned with the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket (on the right side as you look at it) and with the number "2" stamped into the camshaft sprocket, which should also be on the right side as you look at it.
3. Install the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft, aligning the camshaft dowel pin with the number "2" hole near the center of the sprocket.

For the firing order and wiring routing for the 8 plug 4 cylinder engine: (Plugs on the intake manifold side are coded "I", and on the exhaust manifold side are coded "E")

Wire to 1I should be connected to tower on the distributor facing directly to the front of the vehicle. Going counterclockwise from there, the order is (1I), 2E, 3I, 1E, 4I, 3E, 2I, and 4E.
