Acceleration proplems with 97 cadallac seville

I have had problems with my 1997 cadallac seville for some time now.
First, check engine light has been on for 30,000 miles now
It only has 105,000 miles on it.
Second, I changed the fuel pump after the car completely died at 80K but that didn't help this problem.
Third, the car continues to struggle to get up steep hills and i can't it past 40MPH on really steep hills.

Any ideas? Should I ditch the car as it is dying? It does make noises when it is idling but the mechanics said the noise wasn't bad enough to signal total engine meltdown.

It still passes smog checks fine.

Also air conditioner is out. it blows but says it needs the frion liquids to run and mechanic says it would be an expensive repair not just changing liquids or so he thinks.
So with these problems I am considering changing cars before investing big money into it. Thanks!

Has you Mechanic scanned the onboard computer for error codes ?
If the check engine light is on thats the first thing I would be doing , As the car knows whats wrong with itself !
I would be getting a second opinion and recommend that if you are going to do the repairs get 3 quotes.
Hope this helps.
Let me know what the codes are when you get them.

My 97 Cadillac Seville will not start and dies while driving.

Check battery leads. If they're loose, or not making good contact, the engine will shut down or possible not start. It's a safety feature to protect the alternator.

Chances are you have problems with the ignition system.
First thing to do is get the computer scanned for trouble codes to find out why the check engine light is coming on.

sad to say there are a few items and hoses in the way to get to the thermostat housing though it can be done even by a novice but it sounds you have more expereince than a novice, it will just take more time and patience and memory to what goes where, and oif you have water in your oil that would tell if you have a head gasket or cracked head (water in your oil means that the oil on the dipstick is a foamy light brown color) overheating can also be caused by the fan not running propery or at all ( check fuses and fan temperature sensor relays) also it can be caused by a bad waterpump check for leakage, tight belt or squel from the pump

LOUD backfiring/ popping

Things that cause this are usually carburetor problems....sometimes the fuel/air mix is off and the timing too.

What have you done so far to the engine that coould be related to either of these?

Hi geofitzpat,
I need a little more info.
Do the switches on the passenger side work?
Are the windows and door locks both inoperative ? How about a electric mirror control?
Did the switch get wet ( as in rained on ) ?
Is everything else OK?, starts good, headlights are bright? Let me know.
Regards, P.
