no the antenna is original, and I went to the local auto stereo shop and they track my problem to a bad antenna.so now I have to figure out how to replace it without it costing me 200.00

Is this regardless of running or not, or other accessories? Is the antenna original or aftermarket?

Base of the antenna has what is called a "phantom" amplifier.  Mine broke.  Dropped the ceiling and replaced the antenna base.

You could try a mail-order merchant like JC Whitney to see if they have something that will work. Or take your chances at the junkyard for an exact match. Hopefully getting one that works.

I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am with original factory radio. AM and satellite work fine, but FM has stopped working.

It's the receiver inside the radio. It can be fixed, but isn't worth it. You can get a junk yard radio and have it programmed to your car cheaper. After market is even cheaper than that.

are all the radio function dead.?????
what are they, radio, AM and FM dead, cassette, CD,?
if only the radio is dead. (static) then the antenna is bad or its lead in coax wire is bad. or fell off. etc.
the amp (audio is good) as you heard the static.
you can unplug the antenna, wire, from radio and plug in any
lenght of wire to test the radio, any radio can be bench tested this way. and is in any shop.

its very rare today for any head end radio unit to be only a radio.
so do the other features (other audio sources work?) try them.
if they work then the antenna is bad.

Ge model 7 4100ja cathedral radio Static on AM,

My guess is that you got into the radio tuning circuit (little box with the screws) and, unless you have a signal generator and some basic electronic knowledge and equipment, you are just guessing and it's a hit or miss situation. I don't mean to sound pessimistic but may be you know someone who could take a look at it and let you know if it's worth fixing. Hope this helps.

Fix car radio static

old post, and my first radio noise post.
im an old radio guy USN, and ex ham.
Q1: AM or FM? (even on cassette or CD?)
1: bad antenna, and for sure, there are upgrades !
2: too far from station, AM is worst for static, but FM has shorter distance for same station power. (I heard XERB in VietNam! AM)
3: bad radio. (rare for both am and fm bad)
4: bad alternator can sing, play with throttle and it sings higher for higher RPM bingo. stop engine, singing gone?, bingo. Alternator.
5: and last ignition noise, so stop engine still have ignition popping sounds. no more? , then Ignition noise, clicks or pops. (spark)
6: noise has 2 sources , radiated or conducted.
if conducted on power line, 12v to radio , we can buy a filter to stop that.
older cars do this. what year is yours. a honda what a 73 civic?

My radio only works for a short distance then goes staticky, also can't set the time

the operator guide in the glove box , covers time set.
all radios do that.
and if not normal, the antenna is broken or fell off the rear of radio.

if got static switch to FM ,
many AM stations, broadcase to am and fm same content.
so use FM. its static free. (by design) but does fade sooner.
you can in fact hear AM station 12,000 miles away it night
called super stations, 50,000 watt stations. ive done this many time.

did you try another car, in same spot , and same station?
are you in under ground parking?

Static on am radio (comes and goes). fm is fine. 99 Subaru Legacy Wagon.

A static on AM is just interference. Similar to operating a mixer when you are watching TV. You would remember the grains in the TV but no audio disturbance because, video is AM transmitted and audio FM transmitted. A static on AM radio could be due to many factors in the car. The ac system, the music system itself or the engine rpm. The solution does not lie in finding out which is creating the noise, it lies in insulation. Check the antenna and change it if needed. That should fix it.

Excessive static on am stations when engine is running

two types of noise accur on radio's first is known as a whine,, goes up and down with engine rpm secound is static...normally static is from bad plug wire or plug... you probably have coil packs.. one of them could be arcing.. check it out in the dark of night and look for the spark light. most time good tune up fixes let me know
