Question about 1987 Buick LeSabre

Whining when not accelerating

My 2002 century has developed a whine whenever I am not actually giving the engine gas. The fuel filter was recently replaced and obviously clogged.
Please elaborate on the "too much power" answer.
Thanks.

Hey, thanks, I don't think it is actually masked by the other engine noise though. It changes in pitch when I press on the gas lightly and goes away at full acceleration. Also, when I first turn the engine over, it is not present, but ramps up in the first few seconds.
I thank you for your input.

Loosen and remove the Alternator belt which may be a serpentine belt and see if the whining goes away.
It could be the alternator or the water pump if it's driven by the same belt. It will go away while moving because the engine noise is usually negated by road noise etc but it's probably still there.

Whining noise while accelerating in 1st gear

Check the idler and tensioner pullys for your serpentine belt. I suspect the whining noise heard earlier was due to the fact one was getting a bit stiff or rough turning. When you gave it that extra fuel, the sudden load may have finished it off. Sometimes they lock up, and sometimes they fall apart. Check those items first.

High Pitch whine during acceleration

Hi Pullerwife,

I have a few suggestions for you,

First of all, check your air filter, make sure its clean, not clogged, and doesn't need to be changed.

I don't know how handy you are, but if you are fairly handy, check the idler pulley bearings, if your not, have a shop check it out, as a last resort.

Power steering pump/fluid being low is also a possibility, but thats usually more of a lower pitched whine then what you describe.

You say once the vehicle is warmed up, the whining stops. Does Weather seem to be a factor as well?

Hope I've helped, and don't forget to rate.

Miata whines only when accelerating

Have you tried to narrow the noise location. is it comming from the transmision safety plate? is it comming from the belts, or a pully? Have someone litely step on the gas and try to reproduce the noise while not in gear. If possible locate the noise, or narow it down to some sort of location. There are just to many variables to say what it is at this point.

Let net me know once you get more info
