Check your shift lever and tranny.theres a detent cable that locks you into forward or reverse, if thats not set proper you will do both at the same time which would explain the retarded activity of the tranny. the 4x4 issue sounds like an electrical issue, check the switches in the cab as well as the fuses that cotrol the tranny and 4 wheel drive system.

set the transmission to say, drive. position at the t actual trans manual shift lever on side of trans. (the PRNDL switch may be here)

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

One thing that can cause this is a faulty torque converter. If the torque converter is faulty, the shifting of the vehicle fails. One good reason why it only shifts on 2 gears. Have it replaced and you'll be good.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Does it feel like the shifter cable is actually moving the detent in the transmission? I've seen a broken shifter cable in a cavalier a while back with the same symptoms you described. Check the cable where it connects to the transmission. It's under the hood on the drivers side.
