If you have not had a tune up, I would suggest that and change the o2 sensor or atleast have it checked converters dont just go bad, if the car is running lean it will cause the system to run lean which will make it run a hotter system causing the honeycomb in side the converter to melt there are many reasons but those are the most 2 reasons for converter failure the plugs for example in most cars know days if you have a misfire it can cause the check engine light to blink which is telling you there is a malfunction serious enough to damage it

2003 DeVille. Cranks and seems to idle normally. When trying to drive it will not accelerate and seems to choke back. Someone has suggested the catalytic converter needs replacement.

Before you replace your catalytic converter, you can disconnect it and take if for a drive. If the problem goes away, you know you may have a bad component. If the problem is still present, might have other problems.

Catalytic Converter Replacement Repair Cost

code p0420 refers to catalytic converter system bank 1 --efficiency below threshold ===causes -- catalytic converter ---wiring---HO2S 2 sensor
The cheapest part to replace is the HO22S sensor so I would do that first. Bump the cat converter soundly with the heal of your hand and if it rattles it needs replacing as it will be cracked internally. Dismiss any tinny rattle as that will be the heat shield loose
The time taken to replace both in an accredited shop will be less than 1 hour so it may pay to shop around and compare prices on the converter and labour costs.

Because the cat that is approved for California is "finer tuned" than the other 49 states. California emission standards are the toughest in the country, so many engine and emission parts are made just for those standards.

Fault code P0420

This Code means your Catalytic converter is not working like it should. You may have a problem on Bank 1 or the O2 sensor is giving you false readings. At a minimum you should either replace or have the O2 sensor tested to verify that the Catalytic converter is working properly.

If the O2 sensor is accurately performing its job, then have the engine scoped before replacing the Catalytic converter.

You should have received a defect Code for other components which could foul the Catalytic converter. This is why I recommend getting the engine scoped. If other defects were corrected before you purchased this vehicle, then the Catalytic converter may be able to recover by itself.

The Converter costs so much that you should verify things like low compression on the number 1 bank.

I have a 98 2.4 chevy cavaier. bottom at converter is getting red. changed plugs, wires, ignition coil, fuel filter, fuel regulator. Still getting red. What else could we check?

I am assuming that when you say bottom at converter you are refering to the catalytic converter in the exhaust if the converter itself or the inlet area of the catalytic converter is starting to glow red from heat it is because the converter itself is plugged up (bad) and needs replaced. If catalytic converter is bad and not replaced will ruin ignition system components such as plugs plug wires and such as well as intake sensors. I hope I understood your question properly.
