Starter needs replaced

STARTER PROBLEMS

It can be faulty starter or there is loose connection from battery to starter. The starter assembly gets power from battery. Check voltages at starter wires and see if you are getting 12 volts or not. If not then its no power issue due to low battery volt or no connection between battery to starter.

I have to use a hammer to hit the starter of my 1994 Ford Ranger to get it to start. How long can I keep this up or is there another way to do this until I can afford to replace it?

well the hammer could work for a month or a minute. on a bright note normally when a starter is going out on a ranger you can save yourself a lot of money by fixing your starter rather than buying new. the common problem with them is that the brushes inside the starter wear out. these brushes are easily replaceable. once the starter is out look at the backside of the starter and you will see 2 small bolt heads. these bolts come off to expose the inside of the starter and the first thing you will see inside is the brush assembly. the brushes can be removed (the wire coming out of the starter is part of this assem). i'm not sure if they are so;d at autozone, etc. but most areas have an auto electric shop that can get the brush set for you for a fraction of the price of a starter. hope this is of assistants!

Which starter do I need? Yes I am a woman.

There is only ONE starter for this vehicle. A GOOD parts store can be your best friend for this item. Price shop. Most have a "low price guarantee". Replacement is for someone that has the tools and knowledge and experience as a mechanic.

I think they are called heater control valves. Haven't seen one of those since my 1958 Buick Super. I believe they turn off the water to the heater core when in AC mode. Good Luck!

hey tiffini, I checked NAPA online, I see there are quite a few Napa parts stores in your area, they have listings for starters @ about $150, u have to turn in your old starter for 'core' (they rebuild your old one to sell to someone else). You can buy the starter and pay what they call a 'core' charge, this charge (about $50) is refunded to u after u replace the starter and return the old one to the store. You should be able to contact any Napa store and get one in less than 24 hours, or check online. Were u trying to get info on how to remove it (do u have tools?), or just where to find one? Let me know if u need more info. countrycurt0
