Question about 1998 Volvo S90

1 Answer

S90 won't start if not driven daily and AC doesn't work uphill

Late 90's Volvo S90 model with 174k miles. 6mths ago, when i'd start the engine the dashboard and headlights would light up, but the engine would just rev and rev and not turn over. I'd turn it off then rev it again and finally it turned over. Progressed 2 mths later to not turning over at all if I didn't drive it daily; then required a jump start and would be fine for the day. Additionally, AC no longer works if I accelerate while moving uphill or if I run it for a long time on a VERY hot day. Otherwise, AC is fine. Alternated tested at 13.4v, had it replaced. Has not fixed either problem. Radiator replaced, fan and timing belt replaced recently. Battery < 6mths old and fine. Any ideas? Trusted mech looked worriedly at me and spoke of "computer problems" w/ fear in his eyes...

First check the wire harness connecting to the spark plugs ignition coils f/b connections to the fuel injectors and then to the ignition circuit unit and lastly to the gearbox. Check yr all the groundings in the engine bay. If necessary install new grounding wires. As for the air conditioner, check the 2 smal valves in the hood at the firewall, if ok, then it may be one or two of the 4 bellows under the dash has given way. Also check the temperature sensor at the dash (top) front passenger side and the sensor pressure valve (connected to the evaporator piping) underneath the carriage at the front.

Volvo S90 1998, trying to find service/repair manual.

Here's the answer. Contact a Carquest Auto Parts store(worked there 13 years). They have a division known as WorldPac. They can get you what you need. It will be the best repair manual you could have. It will be a little higher than Chilton, but it will be worth it. And Worldpac can get you any part for your car and they're all OEM parts at 1/2-2/3 cheaper than the dealer, and they're Volvo parts. I'd go with them. Good Luck.

Shift funny when ac on and get hot

Need miles - need type of auto transmission.

For now - check the fluid level and if the mileage is over 100,000 take it to a professional and have them give you a hands on diagnoses. Try two places.

I got code 116 on my 1998 volvo s 90 and my engine light is on

I do believe this is the ECT sensor code. This sensor for some reason only on the 960/S90 causes the car not to start. You will need to replace this ECT (engine coolant temperature sensor). On this model I think it is on the back of the head, a gray D shaped 2 wire connector against the firewall. If that is not case, then your sensor is located at the engine side of the upper radiator hose.

1000,000 miles is nothing for a Volvo 240. I sold one running well for $1400 with 235,000 miles ( and bought another used Volvo) The cars are built like bricks. To answer your question: The power windows might be fixed using some silicone spray. Easy ands cheap. The AC could just need a recharge. If not, the compressor is about $900. Sunroof, forget it. New tires - $450 all around for good ones. Paint? If its an issue, go to Maaco. If not, drive it, like I drove mine and forget about the paint. You will get 24-28 mpg on your used Volvo, and will probably keep it for four years. They run forever with little maintenance. Except for the tires and the a/c the other stuff seems minor.
