Question about 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva
The switch is located up high on the brake pedals arm. The switch holder may be broken but if it is only out of adjustment, tighten or loosen the screw threads to make tighter contact.

SOURCE: abs light is on
youre car needs to have an abs diagnostic work up done on it to get a trouble code and to go futher with a repair. on a cutlass the brakes will feel fine with the abs light on but they will not divert brake pressure in the event of a panic stop thus causing a wheel to skid.
good luck. chris

the last solution is not correct i am a professional locksmith and the problem is that the ignition har two wires that read your key and they must if not already broken in the event of the last happening do not settle for repair ignition must be replaced along with a new set of wires that come with the new ignition if the locksmith offers a repair ask if you are getting new ignition or are they just fixing the problem if they are just fixing move on and shop somewhere else crook on site or just not very proffesional, good luck, i have work on approximately 30 cars with same problem for at least 10 years

sounds like a bad or loose ground wire, it would be located in the trunk near the tail light assembly, the other switch is for the cruise contro, it's what cuts the cruise when you hit the brakes.

Try having someone push on brake pedal at the same time thay move the turn signal lever up and down slightly to see if your brake lights work this would tell me that you have a faulty turn signal switch because GM runs the brake lights thru the turn signal switch so they work if you are driving with your 4way flashers on.
