Question about 1998 Cadillac Seville

Overheating of 1998 SLS.

I have checked and replaced most everything from thermostat to top hose. Leak of course is fixed, but now I think my fans are not working. I checked the fuses and relays. I bought a new temp control sensor and am looking for the location to replace the old one. I do not think it is the water pump and am hoping not to have to replace this, since I see no activity from the fans. I still have to make certain there is no blockage between the a/c coil and the radiator, though. Nope no water in oil or vise versa.

Fix the fan first because it causes overheating. Follow with radiator flush. If not, you will need to check the pump.

Does anybody have a video link on how to flush the cooling system on a GM 3.1L SFI OHV 6cyl motor? I need a vid for this particular motor cause mine is still overheating & i have looked everywhere.


flushing a cooling system is the same method as any other motor

do it without the thermostat fitted
or water pump opening

sacrifice an old radiator hose to adapt a garden hose fitting
for radiator flush

air in system fix
your thermostat housing has no air bleed valve
no top radiator cap

old school way
heater on full
run motor till thermostats fully open
burp radiator hoses
wait till water is running up into over flow bottle without bubble
replace cap
turn off heater
correct level in over flow bottle

why still over heating
you fitted everything i would have ... yet still overheat
possibles
leaking inlet manifold gaskets
hose clamps loose
cooling fans spinning too slow
thermostatic fan switch faulty
aluminum radiator is a big one
air ..fins bent or some water channels blocked

or possible head gasket leak

Connie, Were the radiator,water pump and thermostat replaced to try and fix the over heat issue or as maintenance. Engine overheating can be caused by a lot of things, Leak in cooling system, air in system, bad rad. cap, slipping belt, faulty thermostat or installed upside down, faulty water pump, plugged radiator (inside/outside), collapsing rad hose, faulty cooling fan, leaking head gasket, sludge plugging engine water passages, poorly tuned engine, etc..
Take into a good shop for diagnoses and estimate for repair. Check the attached links,instruction and guides, Good luck

What are you going by to say it's overheating , temp gauge ? Have you test to see what the actual temp. is > Hook - up a scan tool ,what's the PCM - engine computer seeing for engine temp. ? 223 degress the PCM should turn on the cooling fan . You could buy a Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer With Laser Targeting at harbor freight ! Radiator very hot ????? What is the right temp .

Could be a bad temp gauge . Is the coolant surging inside the cooling system ? Does it have a radiator cap ? Have you replaced it ?

Why does my cadillac 1998 deville keep overheating?


Overheating can be numerous things: Fans not working, water pump, thermostat, overflow cap, and the list keeps going. When the engine is running and heats ups, feel the heat of the top hose, if the hose isn't hot, the thermostat is most likely stuck open and needs replaced. If it is hot we know you have circulation. The cap on the expansion tank may be defective, if it can't hold the pressure of the water, it will release at the overflow cap if the cap is bad. Also check the coolant level.

SOUNDS LIKE YOUR THERMOSTAT IS STICKING,REPLACE THERMOSTAT FIRST OVERHEATING WILL DAMAGE ENGINE.IF THAT DOSEN'T WORK HAVE WATER PUMP CHECKED.FANS WON'T TURN ON IF HEAT FROM ENGINE IS NOT FLOWING INTO RAD BECAUSE THEROMOSTAT STUCK CLOSED,OR WATER PUMP FAILING

I have 1998 cadillac seville w/northstar motor started getting hot change the radiator. water pump,thermastat we think its head gasket ,cheapest way to fix it . it runs so good but gets hot fast. help


The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line. It's job is to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling,pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side to near the thermostat housing,the blockage may be there.

1994 Honda Civic LX\overheating within 2 mile drive


Remove and raise upper hose at thermostat end and remove lower rad hose.
Fill rad with a hose and watch for flow from bottom rad hose and/ or bottom rad hose connecton.......water should fall though rad easily.
Honda rads are cheap.....any restriction....replace rad.

Remove thermostat....fill thermostat housing with hose and watch for water flow at bottom rad hose.
Flush good.

Remove heater hoses.......flush back and forth until a good flow is present "With heater control set to hot" if no or poor flow....replace heater core.

Stop leak can plug everything.

Also.......not likely causing over heating....but ....at your mileage,if you do not know if the timing belt has been changed.....CHANGE IT NOW!
Water pump is optional at this mileage.

Check that the Radiator cap is good have it pressure tested check the hoses for blockage near the ends they will have the hose separate at the ends and can block water flow you can't see it without removing the hose, also have the radiator rodded out if there is any buildup of calcium inside the radiator it won't cool, it will start heating and continue heating up. And did you replace the fan clutch?
