The very 1st thing u do is have the system tested for the trouble code that is stored whenever the check eng light comes on, but most likely u need a transmission speed sensor, u have lost Over Drive by the sound of it.

If the check engine light is on, you probably have a bad sensor. You should bring it to part store and have the codes read to find out exact problem. It may be a bad sensor, faulty throttle position sensor, or gasket leak

If you have done basic tune up stuff, I would check fuel pressure with gauge installed and running down the highway. Other possibles are bad ignition module, loose wire somewhere in coil circuit, bad fuel pump, filter, many others.

Possibly but to find the fault have the fault codes read . It may be the accelerator position sensor . Don't waste money until you have the codes to point you in the right direction

You mean 3000 not 30000, before you change anything, check the engine with a good scanner.

Dual engine and oil lights

No way to tell what happened with the high idle if you can't make it happen on demand.
The oil and engine lights would come on if the engine died while the key was still on so that was a normal event.
You might stop somewhere and have the computer scanned for trouble codes just in case the computer recorded anything.
The difference in octane should not be a big problem if you don't switch back and forth, after about 50 miles of driving the computer will adjust for the octane of the fuel.

I'm a carpenter. Purchased 2000 tundra engine llight just came on after driving 100 miles. Should I buy a book, find a repair person or what. Oil guage also goes from low to high as rpm...

Oil pressure will increase slightly with RPMs, I wouldn't think it would go too far over the middle mark on the gauge. If it's an actual measurement that's numbered I would think 50 to 60 PSI at highway speeds would be on the high side. Some vehicles are finicky and a loose gas cap or a worn o-ring seal on the cap can cause a check engine light. It would be a good idea to have a scanner hooked to it. Advance auto will normally scan a vehicle at no charge. Write down the codes and google them along with your trucks info. Make year and motor size. Good luck

I have 2000 hyundai sonata, 4cyl...bought 6 mos ago..i noticed the rpm's go all the way to 3 when on highway...and transmission delays to switch gears....will i have transmission problems. pleae tell me...

You may need to have your transmission serviced. That would be a filter and fluid change. Any fast lube place can do that for you. I should think that if there was a problem with the transmission, the check engine light would come on. 3000 rpms does seem a bit high for the highway. Of course, you did not say how fast you were going. My wife tends to have a heavy foot in our 07 Elantra. She keeps the rpms up there around 2500rpm. That's about 80mph. My sincere condolences for your loss. God Bless.

Engine "jumps"/surges

I'd speculate the ECM has failed. These symptoms appeared in my 95 V6 Camry, and at first we thought it was one or more bad injectors, then we replaced the whole ignition lead set, and eventually it was a fault in the ECM. It was found by substitution.

BTW to be certain if you try the ECM, get one from the same body Camry with the same engine and transmission. The ECM programming is peculiar to all those.

The only other thing I can think of is an intermittent contact in the base of the EFI main relay. These are known to develop that fault.
