I have the same problem, but when I pull the transmission fuse I can get 3rd manual and reverse only. Also, when I pull the fuse, the pcm is supposed to go into ''limp home mode'' , but it acts like nothings wrong. no check engine light or anything! I took it up a mountain and turned to around, put the fuse back in and when it got up to 3rd gear speed it engaged in 3rd but 1,2, and 4th didn't work. The transmission is recently rebuilt and I just replaced the valve body and tested all the circuits and replaced the pcm. I think the problem lies in why the check engine or check guages light doesn't work as well as the limp home mode. Also the trans would work and go out and work again. like it was a bad connection. I have not found any bad connections. Anyone have a clue. I sure don't.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Fuse # 20 or 21 gets power through ignition. This fuse controls PRNDL indicator, speedometer, tach, & will cause transmission to not shift gears correctly. Ours took off in 3rd gear when put in Overdrive & only ran in 3rd gear. If we tried to manually shift thru gears (auto trans), it had 1st, 3rd, reverse. No 2nd or over drive. Replaced ignition. Fixed problem. Root problem was Electric motor that engaged 4 wheel low side was bad. Every time we used 4 Low side it threw power surge through ignition & blew ignition out. Good Luck.
Need more info: is manual shift if so 4sp ,5sp or 6sp speed? or auto w/overdrive ? 2) wont go into gear or selects reverse gear but acts like no gear? 3) does forward gears work? ~ 4) how's the fluids?
Maybe your differential is shot and will only allow reverse spin or the transmission was not really rebuilt professionally. Was the transmission checked outside of your car after rebuild? Does your vehicle have a Powertrain Control Module (PCM)? Maybe the module went bad or faulty.
Are you sure you have all 4 forward gears? Most of the time a no reverse condition also means 1st and 3rd only.No 2nd or 4th.If you dont have all the forward gears as i suspect , the reaction shell is stripped or broken. If you do have all the forward gears then these are the two most common reasons you do not have reverse.1 reverse input clutches are damaged or burnt 2 forward cltches have slipped to the point they are welded together causing a mechanical bind in reverse and also causing the transmission to pull forward in neutral.Let me know if i can help.Good Luck.
not sure if this is an automatic or manual transmission 1st (automatic)if all forward gears are still working what it sounds like is that the reverse drum in the transmission has come apart. which will eventually cause the forward gears to start to go if thats the case, the rapir for the reverse drum is internal the transmission will need to be rebuilt. you can just put a reverse drum, but my opinion is there will be more damage and while its out might as well rebuild the entire transmission. you didnt mention if it was 4 wd or not and only rarely have i seen a transfer case cause the same issue, once most recently in a f150 with a manual transmission i was working on the chain stretched so bad it lost reverse but had all forward gears. 2nd (manual) could have lost the reverse synchronizer whic again the trans will need to be repaired either with just a syncro or complete rebuild. hope this helps
This information is from my genuine service manual. I hope it is of help. check fluid if it is a dark color and stinks transmissions probably needs rebuilt sounds like low reverse or direct clutch is bad trna will still go into loe by using forward clutch if low reverse is bad shoul be having problems with 3rd or direct in forward if forward clutch is bad
No reverse in just about any automatic transmission is going to be a mechanical failure inside the trans. This is presuming all the forward gears are ok.I have seen on many occassions where the vehicle has no reverse and no 3rd gear and that makes sense, but is still a mechanical failure,as the direct clutches (3rd gear) are applied in reverse as well as 3rd gear,on most automatics.
