That depends on the age of the battery, if it is only a few years old start with a low charge, if that doesn't work after a few hours u will need to replace the battery.

I have the same problem as jeffwater. seldom use the car in the winter and battery is dead if I don't run the car every two weeks or so. I don't see a switch on the trunk light. is it possible...

Hi, Car batteries lose their power over time if not used or charged. If you store your car in winter, take the battery out and give it a slow charge every month. (just like you do with a motorcycle battery). Or, start the motor and let it run 15-20 minutes every couple weeks. I would recommend doing that anyway to keep the engine oil from draining completely out of your bearings and possibly siezing up motor upon startup a few months later or bearing/engine damage due to excess wear on dry bearings. Thats the nature of the beast, there is no cure for it. Mike

Changed altenater and wont keep charge! Bettery light is on???

Have your battery load tested. Sounds like your battery is just getting what we call a surface charge. It holds the charge momentarily. This would be due to a bad cell in your battery. Even if you have a new battery you can still have a bad cell. I think you are going to find the battery is bad.

how do u know the alternator is charging correctly, u should read 14 volts at the battery when the cars running to know its charging. try wd40 on ur electrical connectors in the engine bay, this will drive any moisture out of the connectors and hopefully correct ur problem.

It a 2003 2.0t 93 model. It sat all winter without running. I started it after charging the battery and it ran for about 50-60 seconds, it then stalled out and it wont start again, unless it sits for...

Take the battery in and have it tested to make sure it is fully charged and is holding that charge and that all the cells are good....letting a car sit for any length of time without starting it and letting it run for a bit is bad news. Batteries will go bad. Gasoline left to sit in a car will "go bad" and can leave a coat of varnish on sensitive injectors, fuel lines, etc... Water and debris can ruin the fuel filter. Check the battery first, put some injector cleaner in the gas tank and you may also want to spray the throttle body with a recommended cleaner before trying to start again. It may also help to pull your spark plugs and clean or replace them. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Yes batterys can come apart inside. The plate breakdown and drop into bottom not allowing charge anymore. Low charge can do alot of weird things to you jag. Replace the battery and when you do have them check alternator charging ability while your there. Almost all auto store will do this for free.

Sounds like your alternator bearing are worn and will need to be replaced soon. Keep an eye on your alternator charging system, it may still be working fine (13.5-14.5 volts) but the bearing is warn and the alternator will fail when it does fail 100%.
Have your alternator inspected and replace it before winter comes.
Thank you for using fixya and be safe.

I would definitely put in a new battery. You can bring it to a battery dealer and they will test it for free before you replace it.

You will have to consult your owners manual for the warning light.
