Trying to replace heater core but can't seem to find the bolts to remove the lower dash

The lower dash is pried off. Then there are screws for the heater core cover

Who knows where I can get a guide to replace the Heater Core on my 2006 Ford Freestar?

this is a big job, time consuming. Is it leaking coolant?

Removal and Installation
NOTE: If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle.
  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03.
  1. Position the front seats fully rearward.
  1. Depower the supplemental restraint system. For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B.
  1. Remove the wiper motor and pivot assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 501-16.
  1. Remove the LH and RH windshield side garnish mouldings. For additional information, refer to Section 501-05.
  1. Remove the LH and RH A-pillar lower trim panels. For additional information, refer to Section 501-05.
  1. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  1. Lower the glove compartment.
  1. Remove the 3 steering column opening panel lower bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  1. Remove the steering column opening panel cover.
  1. Remove the steering column opening panel upper bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  1. Remove the steering column opening panel reinforcement.
  1. Remove the 4 storage console pin-type retainers.
  1. Remove the storage console.
  1. Remove the rear seat floor duct adapter.
  1. Remove the upper instrument panel finish panel.
  1. Remove the LH lower instrument panel bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  1. Remove the LH upper instrument panel bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  1. Remove the 4 upper instrument panel bolts.
  1. Remove the upper instrument panel cowl bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  1. Remove the 4 instrument panel center support brace bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  1. Remove the LH instrument panel support bracket bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  1. Loosen the RH instrument panel bolts one half of the bolt length, but do not completely remove the bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  1. Working through the glove compartment opening, remove the RH instrument panel support bracket bolt.

  1. Position the LH side of the instrument panel slightly away from the dash panel.
  1. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing support brace nut.
  1. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing support brace bolt.
  1. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing support brace.
  1. Remove the 4 floor duct screws.
  1. Remove the floor duct.
  1. Remove the 7 heater core cover screws.
  1. Detach the wire harness from the heater core cover.
  1. Remove the heater core cover.
  1. Remove the heater core.
  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Fill the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03.

Heater coil replacement


I just did mine last weekend and my my its a job I pulled the seats out to make it easier and if it has ac that will have to be discharged also. well start by removing your center console2_bing.gif then your radio then take off your dash speaker covers off and your defroster covers off you will see a bunch of bolts that hold on your dash under all them covers so go ahead and remove all the bolts then move down under the dash and there is a bolt on both corners of the dash that goes into the lower panel remove them I also removed the bolts the hold the steering wheel up so it can lower down alittle to give you more room then ontop of your gauge cluster you will see two screws that holds the gauge cover on remove them and in the cover you also have headlight switch and hazzered and rear defroster make sure you unplug the harnesses to them then you will have to start unhooking all the other plugs and wiring that plugs into things on dash then get the dash out oh the way and go under hood and remove heater2_bing.gif core hoses and you will need a specal tool to remove ac line then you will see one bolt next to the heater core hoses so go ahead and remove that then back to inside you will see the brackets that hold on heater Assembly onto the car2_bing.gif and go ahead and remove them and pull whole assembly out and you will see the heater core cover its held on with 4 screws so remove them and finally remove heater core and get some sealant to put around the new heater core this is a lot of work it took me about 12 hours to complete and get you a bucket because their is alot of nuts, bolts, clips so good luck

Do i have to take the dash apart to change the heater core on a s-10 pickup


Sorry, your going to have to remove the dash.
  • Remove the front dash panel by turning the lower screws in a counter-clockwise direction, then unscrewing the single bolt on the lip of the instrument cluster and pulling the panel out. Remove the rear wiper switch and the 4x4 switches, if applicable. Lowering the tilt wheel will allow the panel to be totally removed.
  • Remove the radio, headlight switch module and glove box by turning their screws in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • Remove the main dashboard by unbolting it at the front, between the windshield and firewall. There are six to eight bolts holding it in, and, once they are removed, the dash can be pulled away from the firewall. Be careful not to pull too much, as the wiring harness could become damaged.
  • Drain the coolant system by turning the drain plug on the lower left corner of the radiator and allowing the fluid to fall into the drain pan. Uncapping the radiator can reduce the internal pressure.
  • Remove the heater core hose, on the upper left of the engine bay by pinching their hose clamps with a pair of pliers and pulling them off. Some models will have screw-type hose clamps; turning them counter-clockwise will loosen them. Age and heat may have stuck the hoses to the core nipples, and the hoses can be cut right at these nipples if necessary. Leave enough hose to reconnect the new core.
  • Unbolt the heater core's mounts with a socket wrench in a counter-clockwise direction. Once the bolts are free, the heater core can be maneuvered toward the windshield and slid out. Some coolant may splash out, so have a towel handy.
  • Replace the heater core with a new one by sliding it into place and securing the mounting bolts.
  • Reconnect the heater core's hoses, turn the radiator's drain plug clockwise to close it, then refill the coolant system with a 50/50 percent mix of coolant and water.
  • Reconnect the dashboard to the firewall, then replace the front dash panel and fasten its instrument cluster screw and bottom bolts.
  • Crank up the Jimmy and add coolant until the heater core is filled and blowing hot air.
  • Replace the radiator cap.
Good luck and make sure you have lots of time and use the camera on your cell phone and take pictures to use as reference.

Do you have to remove whole dashboard on 96 gmc jimmy to remove and replace heater core?or can you do everything from underneath the glove box?

The Jimmy uses a coolant-heated radiator core mounted in the dashboard to provide heated air into the passenger compartment. This heater core can become clogged and leak, as it is usually the lowest point in the coolant system and debris settles into it. Replacement of the heater core will take the average of about two hours to complete. Good luck

How to replace heater core on my 1998 chevy blazer


pretty easy to do. go to passenger side of dash and remove glove box for working room. there is a lower panel below the dash that needs to be removed. disconnect the heater hoses under hood. once panel under dash is removed you will see the heater box remove the 6-8 bolts around the very base of it, it will able to be lowered down and you will see the heater core it has a couple of brackets that hold it in place remove these. put new one in its place and put back together.

Need to replace heater core in 76 Eldorado convertible


You dont have to remove the dash but it might make it a easier job if you did. The heater core is removed from under the R/S dash. after removing the lower dash covers, glove BOX, A/C programmer. Then from under the hood, disconnecting heater hoses, and removing heater case mounting bolts.Then finally jockying the heater box from under the dash without spilling coolant fronm the heater core is a trick. Hope this helps.

Replacment of heater core on 01 chevy S-10


Have replaced my heater core in my 2001 regular cab 4wd in december 2009. Had to pull the complete dash including the complete metal dash behind the dash that you see. Also had to remove the right passenger side inner fender well to acess the remaining two bolts that hold the heater core cover to the firewall. Its an insane job to do but the repair shop books call for 9 1/2 hrs to do the job. I'm not an expert but this is what it takes.

Removal & Installation
1.Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core, and plug openings. Detach hood release cable. Remove both dash side panels. Remove left and right lower dash trim panels. Remove glove box. Remove 7 screws securing center accessory console. Disconnect wires on accessory console, and remove accessory console. Remove control cables at heater case.

2.Remove 4 bolts securing steering column to instrument panel. Lower steering column. Remove 2 bolts from instrument panel mounts at far left and right sides of instrument panel. Remove defroster duct trim on top of dash. Remove instrument cluster screws. Pull instrument cluster out slightly. Disconnect electrical connections and speedometer cable from instrument cluster. Remove instrument cluster.

3.Disconnect all electrical connectors from instrument panel. Remove parking brake console. Remove glove box. Remove bolts securing instrument panel support to floorpan. Remove all instrument panel mounting bolts. Remove instrument panel.

4.Separate heater case from blower. Remove 3 nuts and pull heater

not the whole dash.the glove box door and liner, the kick panel and un-bolt the lower right corner of the dash.
