It maybe just a bad thermostat.
First check coolant level. If it is low, pull out the engine oil dipstick and check the top for whiteish foam or cream . Also check the engine oil filler cap for the same. If the foam (or cream) is present you could have a bad head gasket or warped or cracked head.
If there is no foam then you most likely need a new thermostat.

I have a bmw 318 the the amber light of exhaust emission deteriorated has come on There is also cream colour muck inside the engine oil cap. Is it safe to drive. The oil was low.Thank you. Kanica.

That's not good, cream coloured oily muck on the oil filler cap usually means water is in the oil. This would indicate either a blown head gasket or cracked head. Somewhere water is getting into the engine. I would get it looked at ASAP as major engine damage can occur if you havent already done so.

If my head was cracked or blown would my check engine light be on

not obviously, you can have a look in the oil filler cap, if the oil is milky with a white tint, then the head most probably has an issue as this would indicate water in the oil. The cap inside should be black or brown.

Could be the computer did not like the change in ratio if the size of the tires are different. You would need to get the trouble codes checked to proceed.

I have a 1993 Ford Escort with a 1.9 engine. When I start it I see a cloud of steam like vapor that kinda smells like coolant. I have to add coolant about once a week. The car runs fine, no power loss etc....

remove the engines oil cap and look at the inside of the oil cap.
If it has an amount of gel like pudding I call it inside the cap YOU DO have a coolant leak for it is mixing with your engine oil

My landroverdiscovery 2000 shuts off after running for about 10 to 15 minutes then wont restart until engine cools done mechanic says it has a headblown gasket but truck is not overheating

hi, to me it sounds like the oxygen sensor needs replacing if it runs fine when cold then plays up when it reaches temp then this would be the sensor as the sensor only starts working when it reaches running temp

Check the oil for signs of water if its like chocolate ice cream then this indicates head gasket failure

check water for signs of oil this would look lik mayonaise floating on top in the water filler bottle.

Whilst its running check the water level doesnt rise if it does then head gasket gone if it remains the same then you should be ok.

When it gets to temp and cuts off remove the water filler cap and then try starting if it starts then this is head gasket failure

If none of those show up then i would go with the oxygen sensor replacement.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

White fumes in the engine oil filler cap

Sounds like you have blown the head gasket when it got overheated.. The white stuff in the oil cap is emusified oil, a bit like mayonnaise.
You will almost certainly need to replace head gasket and service the cylinder head.

Engine lost power then stopped

Check your radiator and see if you have oil in it by what you are describing it sounds like you got it to hot and possibly blew a head gasket.....this vehicle has a low indicator oil switch if your lucky and havent blown gasket try adding oil to required level and then start this will also confirm if head gasket is blown by the presence of the oil lookin like coffee with alot of cream....Good Luck...Please rate so it helps with future diagnostics .....Thank you
