Question about Chrysler LHS

1 Answer

1999 Chrysler 3.5 liter engine Changed timeing belt ,water pump, and belt hydraulic piston for belt teninsioner. Car would crank but would not start. Rechecked timing marks none of the three (crank, and both cams)will index.I suspect that the crank rotated as I was torqueing the damper wheel bolt since the damper wheel is not keyed to the crank.I had to replace the radiaitor due to it leaking and then decided to replace the timeing belt ,water pump ,and belt tenisioner. Since the engine has been cranked can I (with no timing belt in place) turn and the cams and crank clock wise and reindex from the front of the engine to top dead center index. The radiator and damper wheel are out of the car agine.

If you cranked this engine with the belt off u have bent the valves, I have the factory manual for this engine and they bend valves if belt is positioned incorrectly or not on when engine is cranked, sorry but that is how they are built.

1995 Chrysler 3.5 liter timing issue-what indicates the belt tensioner needs replacement?

Timing belts last a 100,000 miles easy. Even the owner's manuals will generally state the replacement interval for a timing belt or serpentine belt to be over 100k 5 years. It is just inspections up till then.

I ve just changed water pump, the battery was weak friend pull the car to kickstart while trying to kickstart timing belt brakes while car is in motion but not idling, what went wrong in the engine?help

Depends on whether you have an "interference" or "noninterference" engine. Since you do not mention what you are working on, impossible to know. If noninterference engine, just replace belt after lining up crank and cam(s). If interference, you may have heard bad noises as belt broke, and could have bent valves or even damaged pistons.

I have a 99 Chrysler Sebring. My brother changed my water pump and timing belt. Now it won't start. He tried to reset the timing, but he can't get the steering bracket off to check the top timer. The motor...

Your Chrysler has what is called an "Interference" engine. This means if the Timing is off the Valves will hit the pistons. That is the "sounds like something is hitting inside" noise.
You should NOT continue trying to start you car until the timing of the cam shaft and crankshaft is guaranteed correct. The valves and pistons may already be hurt, but if you get everything timed right you may get lucky. Really nothing to lose by timing it right and see what happens.
I am sad about this situation, especially when a brother is just trying to help out.

Will a broken timing belt and water pump require replacement of engine head valves 1 and 3?

If this is 2.0 liter duel over head cam than engine damage most likely will happen if the timing belt brakes sorry about the bad news .

2004 chrysler 300m 3.5L waterpump location and does it run off the timing belt/chain

Yes the water pump does run of the timing belt system.
Directly from the service manual:

The 3.5L water pump has a die cast aluminum
housing and a plastic swept vane impeller. It bolts
directly to the right rear timing belt cover using an
O-ring for sealing. The water pump is
driven by the engine timing belt.

The water pump on all models can be replaced
without discharging the air conditioning system.

NOTE: It is normal for the water pump to weep a
small amount of coolant from the weep hole (black
stain on water pump body). Do not replace the
water pump if this condition exists. Replace the
water pump if a heavy deposit or a steady flow of
engine coolant is evident on water pump body from
the weep hole (shaft seal failure). Be sure to perform
a thorough analysis before replacing water

(1) Drain cooling system (Refer to 7 - COOLING -

(2) Remove accessory drive belts (Refer to 7 -

NOTE: The water pump is driven by the timing belt.

(3) Remove engine timing belt (Refer to 9 -

(4) Remove water pump mounting bolts (Fig. 31).
Note position of longer bolt for proper re-installation.

(5) Remove water pump body from engine
