Only one tank (rear) is working. Every time I switch to the front tank it runs for a few min and cuts out. What is the problem? The main fuel pump was just replaced and works fine and there were no issues till the replacement.

There is a low pressure pump in each tank, we call it the "pickup" pump, it is either bad or the tank selector switching valve on the frame rail is defective

U will hear the valve as it switches with the key on and engine off, very easy to hear, they are very reliable for the most part, if the fuel pumps have over 100,000 on them they are very suspect, do u hear it run (humming noise) when the key is turned on without the eng running? it will run for about 3 seconds and then auto shut down unless the engine is started

Hi, Check fuel pump that it is running properly. Sounds like an electrical problem with the pump. Good luck.

1996 ford f150 cuts off

Look for rotten or broken vacuum lines around the throttle body and the EGR rail. Also, if you have a two tank system, wiggle the tank selector switch from front to rear several times and then try starting it again and see how it runs. If it seems to clear the problem, run for a few days and then replace it. This was my problem. A $12 part and it would also give erratic engine codes. It would run excellent after a hard time starting and cut right out for no reason. It has to be something simple! A smooth running engine does not just quit. Also check the fuel pump relays (tapping them or swapping them cleans the contact surfaces and also check the wiring underneath the modules for any green corrosion or exfoliation) and associated wiring harnesses for damage or moisture or greasyness. A flashlight and mirror is useful for this. I can not empasize enough to check all over for vacuum leaks. Loose twisty hosing signals leaks too. replace or cut shorter to make a new seal. Good luck!

it may have a seperate pump for the seprate tanks im not sure. it acts to me like its running thaose few miles on fuel left in lines from the back tank. i would start by selcting the frount tank when you put it to bed one night, then in morning have some one turn the key while you listen for a fuel pump if i didnt hera one i would start there. if i heard one check for a seperate fuel filter for the frount tank then check for pluged lines between the two tanks. it has to be someting simple. good luck.

I have a 1996 f150 and I had the same problem. I finally found out that the rear fuel pump is the main pump, and if it goes out then the front pump will not work either. There is a groud that both pump share on the rear cross member. If you are not getting good connection with the ground the fuel pumps will not work. Also if you replace the rear pump and it still does not work then your problem could be the fuel tank selector switch, it acts as a relay if it goes out then neither pump will work.

Rear tank full and selected for use but draws from the front

hi your symptoms suggest that you have slight blockage either in fuel line or most likely at point where rear tank fuel line enters the switch over reason ? you say runs ok on rear tank at 55mph? but when demand for more fuel / speed above that pump /engine cannot deliver ? due to narrowing of fuel line (tuberculation) so check flow from r/tank and for any debri inside?
