Question about 1997 Dodge Neon
I am trying to sell the car, do not want to put any more money in it than needed. It has a rattle noise like someone dangling a chain in rear strut towers. Rides rough, so I think it needs shocks in rear. Is it possible it needs new strut assembly? How hard is it to change shocks? I just put a new trannie in it and a junk yard radiator. Need to sell ASAP. I have more money now invested in the car than I will ever sell it for.
This is a classic problem with dodge neons. If you take out the carpet and try to shake your car side ways, you will actually see the strut move and make ratting noise. You can try tighten the nuts and bolts. There are only two bolts holding the strus from the bottom side and 4 nuts on the top side. More than likely you need a replacement. To replace struts, you need a spring compressor. However, your mounts and bushings might have worn out as well. If you find complete spring assembly and strut from the junk yard, that might just solve your problem. Make sure they are tight when you install them because if you don't your struts will be worse then on you have now.
