Overdrive is a switch on the automatic shifter (normally)which selects the overdrive gear ,changes gear ratio so yuo will be doing less rpm at high speed, leave it off at low speed

For a Ford 2006 expedition Xlt do I drive with overdrive on or off. I'm not pulling anything and this is my first t suv

Your owners manual should explain how overdrive works.
Under normal conditions, you drive in overdrive all the time. The transmission computer decides if overdrive is necessary or not.
The only time you drive with overdrive off is when you are descending a steep hill or pulling a load.

Toyota's automatic overdrive is always electronically switchable; it could be the OD solenoid (in the transmission).
