Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
I just replaced the starter but that didn't fix the problem. I did however find that if I turn the key to the start position and then push up on the key it will turn over, which makes me think that it's the ignition switch.
I think that you have solved this one yourself , The car is 11 years old so that key has done alot of work. You will find that the problem will be in the contacts at the end of the barrel usually 2 srews and a couple of plugs and its out.Remove it and get either a new one or a second hand one.
Just remember to disconnect the negative lead on the battery and you should dont it fairly easy.
Hope this helps
