Depending on the color of the smoke.....

Blue smoke = Burnt oil (Valve steam oilseals)
To fix you need them replaced can be done without removing the head.

Black smoke = Too much fuel (Running rich)
Tune-up replace air filter.

If its a turbo it could be the seals in the turbo but i doubt it as it stops smoking.
Hope this helps , Please rate me as feedback does help.

My 2005 gmc canyon just started blowing smoke out tail pipe but it doesnt do it everytime i start it. is this bad?

Possibly a leak in the head gasket. Take out the plugs and see if they are water wet. Run a compression check.

My 98 firebird tail pipe blows white smoke and water out the tail pipe then as i let it sit for 30 minutes the engine gets hotter then gas like smile and heavier smoke come out the tail pipe it also s

One of the main causes of white exhaust smoke and coolant loss is a cracked or warped cylinder head, a cracked engine block, or head gasket failure caused by overheating. A cracked head may allow coolant to leak into one or more cylinders or into the combustion chamber of the engine. Dirty coolant, a poorly maintained cooling system, a low coolant level, or a non-functioning cooling fan can cause engine overheating. In addition, engine wear can eventually cause the gaskets to lose their capacity to seal properly allowing internal coolant loss. Intake manifold gasket and head gasket failures are two of the most common sources of internal coolant loss caused by engine wear.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

There should be a relay. Probably located in the PDU box under the hood. If not the motor might be going bad.

White smoke exhaust

White smoke is caused by coolant or water coming out the tail pipe. There is a chance that the white smoke was caused by water splashing up from a puddle onto the exhaust pipe. Keep an eye on the coolant level in the radiator in any event. If its less then there leak coolant leak in the car engine which is causing this problem....

White smoke?

It's just condensation. Water will also drip from the pipe.

The colder it is, the worse the 'smoke' will be. I was in Vernal, Utah earlier this week, drove through -18*F weather, my truck never quit blowing white smoke.

And NO IT IS NOT YOUR HEADGASKET
