Mcdevito75 here, It sounds like the release button on your transmission shifter will not release the shfter itself so you can change gears, (Shift to D, R, N etc) Chances are it"s the shifter itself and not the transmission. Best Bet, let your local repair shop look at the problem.

Driving on interstate transmission suddenly disengages and will not reengage any forward gear. The car will go in reverse. Whats the fix?

from what you stated ,,this could be a bad transmission or a shift sensor in the transmission ,,,this is a clutching problem with these automatics ..most cases have proven that you can change the transmissions fluid ,module and filter to allow proper shifting and the codes allow the clutching to return to normal...I am 90% sure from your post

Car doesn't change gear when cold

Most likely the tranmission seals are getting old and are not very pliable when cold and so will not allow the shift. The transmission should be rebuilt which would give it new seals and therefore shift. There are some additives at the local parts store that will soften the seals and in some cases make the transmission shift. Autozone, Advance auto and most part stores will have something for that.

I have a 1994 Lincoln Contenental. Car drives just fine in first gear but will not shift into second gear.

If it is an automatic check and make sure that you have enough automatic transmission fluid in the car to little fluid will not allow the transmission to shift.

2001 kia sportage . transmission does not change

Popular Problems Checks
1. Car will not go into gear:
  • Gear selector cable has failed
  • Brake lock solenoid/brake light swtich has failed not allowing the gear selector to move out of "Park"
  • Excessively low transmission fluid (note: if car is operated for an extended amount of time with low fluid level the transmission will fail prematurely)
  • Shorted electrical component not allowing the PCM to control the transmission. Example: shorted fuse
  • Flex plate (flywheel) is broken completely not transferring engine power to the transmission.
2. Car goes into gear but then fades out of gear or is slipping while driving:
  • Transmission fluid is low
  • Transmission clutch discs or bands are worn out or burned
  • Faulty transmission shift solenoid.
3. Car goes into gear but does not shift out of first:
  • Blown fuse to the PCM controller
  • Faulty vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
  • Shorted second gear control solenoid
  • Faulty transmission controller (PCM)

Rattling / grinding sound coming from engine area when vehicle is in gear and car break is applied, but when gear is set into neutral noise stops. Was told the problem was the aircondition compressor....

Just a couple ideas...
Your engine and transmission will shift slightly when in drive, and maybe that movement is allowing it to rub on something. Another issue may be that the noise is actually from the transmission.
Torn motor mounts will allow the drive train to shift or move farther than normal.

1999 taurus. 6 cyl OHV. Ran fine over the weekend. Parked car in driveway. Started this morning. Heard high(RPM) pitch winding sound coming from engine or tranmission. Noticed will not reverse or move into...

Check for vacuum lines going to transmission or any vacuum line under hood. It is possible an animal chewed on the lines or wires. We get a few reports of that at Fixya.

You might also look under the dash by the pedals for a vacuum leak. There are vacuum switches for parking brake release and the neutral start switch.

What is the difference in the gear lever position between D and M while driving

The tranmission allows you two driving styles fully automatic (D) or manual (M). (D) behaves like a normal transmission while (M) uses the + for gearing up and - for gearing down. You'll notice when you switch to (M) the number of the gear your presently in shows up on the speedo. After that you just operate it as you would a manual. When you come to a stop the transmission will automatically shift down to 1 but as you accelerate you will need to shift the lever forward to the + to shift up. You can switch between both transmission modes while driving.

1992 Chrysler New Yorker transmission won't shift out of first gear.

Hi,

i had the same problem like drushlow in my Eagle Vision, wich has the same engine and transmission. Your transmission is going into safety mode wich allows you to go on but just in 2nd gear. The Problem in my car was the EGR Valve. In other words the engine had a problem and the transmission swiched into safety mode to make sure the engine don´t get any more damage. So i´m very sure your transmission is still OK but there is only one way to find out what is wrong. Drive to a chrysler dealer and read the errror code (that only cost you 20 to 40 dollars). After that you know what´s wrong and can decide what you wanna do.
