Question about 2003 Pontiac Grand Am

My air conditioner is on all the time once the fan switch is switched to low, medium, and high regardless if i press the a/c switch on/off. the light lights when pushed on and off.

Follow the wires from the switch until you get to the relay. THe relay will need to be replaced

3 speed fan barely changes speed


You are talking about your blower fan for the air conditioner and heater right? More information will be needed to solve the problem.

When you say it barely changes speeds, does that mean it doesnt speed up, or doesnt slow down? By that I mean, is it "stuck" on low, or high?

Most blower fans run at different speeds through the use of a multi-stage resistor built into the fan switch circuit. Low speed is a high value resistor, medium speed is a low value one, and high speed is the fan running without any resistance.

If your fan is running on high and doesnt seem to want to run on lower speeds, the resistor pack may be failing. If the fan is running on low speed only, it may be that the fan itself is beginning to fail, or that the lubricant in it has gotten gummy.

Do they stay on with high and low beam? If high or low beam make a difference then you likely need a multi-function switch. If they stay on regardless of high or low beam your Daytime Running Light Module (DRL) may be faulty. It should be located on the rad support, ahead of the radiator. Once you located it, unplug it and see if your lights go out. If they do, replace the DRL. If they do not you likely need a headlight switch.

1992 chevy C1500: Heat works on low speed, no medium, and high only works intermittantly.


On any other vehicle it sounds like the blower fan switch.
The fan switch provides power or ground to the resistor and there would be a high speed blower relay to bypass the resistor.
But in your case the fan switch is part of the controller.
I don't have a diagram for a 92 but the 94 model shows relays for low medium and high speeds. Each relay gets power from a fuseable link. The high relay gets power thru the low relay if the low relay is not engaged.
If you have the model with 3 relays you may need to check them.

2006 Ford Mustang blower fan works on high only -


Need to change the switch that works high, medium, and low. It is a separate switch mounted usually behind the glove box or somewhere under the dash. Hope this helps, Mitchell.

Heater fan only works on "high speed"


All cars are designed with a blower fan motor that pushes air through the ventilation system. This air is processed by a series of vents to direct the air to various positions. Example: heater, air conditioner and defrost modes. Most blower motors are power by a basic electrical circuit that utilizes a multi resistor or a solid-state resistor to control different fan speed modes (low, medium low, medium and high). If the resistor malfunctions it may lose one or more of the lower fan speed settings.

AC comes on in low to medium but shuts off on high.


It could possibly be the switch. Many automotive a/c blowers have a relay to engage the highest fan speed because the high current required will necessitate the use of heavy wiring to and from the blower motor and a heavy duty switch. Check for a high-speed relay and also there might be a circuit breaker in the blower system.

1995 GMC A/C fan only works on high???


Two possible problems. First the Freon level might be too low to allow the low pressure protection switch from letting electricity get to your compressor's clutch. This is just a 'most likely' reason, there can be others.

But then you definitely have a problem with the heater resistor pack that is mounted in the heater's air stream somwhere behind the glove box. This device allows for low, and medium fan speeds but needs to be cooled or else it will melt and open up electrically. When that happens you 'loose' fan speeds except for high which is 12 volts direct to the heater motor.

This year GM pickups needed the HEPA air filter but did not have one so that all manner of hay trash, leaves and you name it would plug up the air conditioner evaporator inside the cab which in turn stopped enough air flow to the heater resistor pack which causes it to fail and you wind up with no DOT required defroster AND carbon monoxide preventing air flow into the cabin. There is law and how they avoided a class action suit is beyond me but you are looking at about a hundred dollars to replace the resistor pack and heater switch too.

You might have minimum success blowing the trash out of the evaporator backwards after you take it all apart, as a passenger when you kick the 'heater', that is right where you need to go to clean out the evaporator. It's only 1/2 inch thick and on the bottom of the pile.

If you have good air flow on high then you can disregard the blowing out of the evaporator and just concentrate on getting to the resistor pack - we just changed it with the switch panel to get it all done with in one shot. There is an outside chance that fixing the resistor pack/switch will return your compressor's voltage as well, there is no telling how that switch has it's failsafes integrated.

Delayed or intermittent heat


after checking the heater core hoses they were both hot I went in to look at the blend door and noticed it wasn't moving on hot or cold so I simply disconnected the lincage and moved to hot and its working ok. but its not completely repaired

Air conditioner won't stay on.


'64 could be right, but these Malibu's also have a tendency to go through HVAC head control units, among other things. I have taken the head unit out of mine and cleaned the contacts, etc...with some success. However, from what I've seen, this is just a temporary fix. These units run upwards of $200 at a dealer, but you can get one online for just over $100. It is a really easy install.

Other common problems include:
-Cruise control modules going bad (cruise kicks off at will)
-Bad resistor on fan blower (only speeds 3-5 will work)
-Front coil springs breaking
-Front brakes wear funny, excessive wear
-Moisture in headlight housings
