Question about Dodge Ram 2500

1 Answer

96 dodge ram runs hot, well some say that they just run at 220 deg. or hotter but they are dead wrong. I posted earlier that I had replaced the water pump, radiator, thermostat, hoses and still it runs hot. Well, I found the problem. And yeah, that's the temp they run at if you don't mind cracking your heads and blowing a head gasket. Your dodge with a 5.9L (360) should run at about 200 deg. The problem I had was a blown Intake manifold gasket. Yes, to my surprise, a major vacuum leak will cause your engine to run warm (not necessarily over heat). But eventually, running at 220 or 230 will cause serious problems. I suggest if you're having the same issue with running hot, take the time and do this job. It shouldn't take more than about 12 hrs and it's well worth your time and $50 in materials. Get a thermostat bypass hose while you're at it, I guarantee it needs it. I've been trying to figure this out for 2 years and finally, I got it fixed. Stop listening to those people saying that it's supposed to run that hot. Only a very late model engine should run this hot. If it's over the center line on your temp guage, it's too hot. Fix it before there is more damage.

My 97, 5.2 runs 200 without AC, if I turn on AC, it goes to 220. Replaced clutch fan, thermostat, water pump, and new cap. Backflushed block and radiator. No results. Why so hot? Only 92K on unit.

dodges run like that. if your worried put a 180 degree thermostat in. maybe even a 160 . wont hurt engine or fuel mileage . my 99 dodge ram 1500 sport runs fine with 160 degree one. hope it helped , good luck

96 Dodge Runs fine but after warms up it dies, cools n will crank n run good then dies again after warming up.

Hey Dennis,, DON"T BECOME A PARTS REPLACER..(some people who "call themselves mechanic's" are just that!),.. .take this Dodge to a qualified professional... talk to them..
You say warm... do you mean full running temp?? .if so, you may be experiencing a vapor lock,, fuel "boils" when the engine is hot.. when it cools its no longer hot enough to cause this..(S.W.A.G.)

Runs cool for about 15 miles then it gets hot(220) so i turn it off to let it cool about a half gallon of water is gone

220 to 230 deg. F is actually normal for the 1998 Cadillac Deville. If it goes to 250 deg. F or even 260 deg. F it goes into a limp mode where fresh air is pumped into 1/2 of the cylinders to preserve the engine up to 40 mi. of travel (in the case that a radiator fan isn't working or coolant has completely leaked out of the system).

If a half gallon of water is gone in the system and you keep losing it, there is a leak in the system say in the water pump o-ring or the radiator, or a hose.

Correct installation of thermostat for 2004 dodge 1500, 4.7 engine, runs abnormally hot, just a tad over middle temperature range, after being run top hose very hot to touch, bottom hose cool, thanks in...

you know when its wrong the guage goes to the top, then drops.the temp guage is notoriously wrong on most cars,so if your not losing power, water, leave it.(the top hose is hot, about boiling point, the botom should be just warm)thats what the radiator does......

did you use pure antifreeze if so remove it all and add a 50/50 mixture because antifreeze will not heat up good if its pure. needs water to allow good heat.

96 dodge ram runs hot.....replaced everything...help!

Gosh...in this day and age that is not that hot.which is hard to believe. are you experiencing temp gauges in the red or overheating? Im seeing some vehicles blazing at 250- 260 F and still rambling on ...I like the old 180 degree days from the past personally but due to USA emmission laws, some of these engines need to run this hot to pass rigid emmission standards

'98 Buick Park Avenue running hot

replace the thermostat just to be safe. not to do so is what i call to gag on a nat and swallow a hog. then pressure check the cooling system to make sure it is not making pressure above what is on the radiator cap. if it is you may have a blown head gasket. make sure yer not gettin antifreeze in the oil.
