Question about 1997 Dodge Intrepid

200 Dodge Intrepid randomly stalls

My car just quits running at the most awkward times. I believe it is shorting out or something. I went to a store turned off the engine and then the headlights. When I came back out the car wouldn't start. The engine turned over fine but it wouldn't fire up. After an hour of trying to start the car I decided to turn on the headlights just for the heck of it. To my disbelief it started right up.

The car still stalls at random times but it always fires right up now. Any ideas?

Hey Brad!
So you're saying that there seems to be a relation between the headlights and the engine issue... Seems strange, but I've seen similar symptoms on a car where one of the clamps on the battery poles weren't secured tight enough (even though they did look/feel ok). Could also be that the ground wire (running from the negative pole on the battery) has a bad connection. Check and clean those first, it's both easy and cheap.
If it's not related to the battery you might have a faulty sensor somewhere. If so you should check your onboard diagnostic sensor for any codes.
Good luck mate!

Did engine swap turn key on get ERROR

You may have forgotten to connect something, or you may have pinched a wire or two while installing engine. If your battery was fully charged and went dead this would be a sign of pinched wires (short). Carefully look in your engine compartment and go back over everything you did step by step. I believe you will find your problem. GOOD LUCK FRIEND.

While driving engine quit lights out all power off then came back on

Thats a strange one. Even a loose battery cable should not cause that if the engine is running. The engine would have continued to run off of the alternator. The only thing that makes sense to me is that something BIG possibly shorted out - like maybe the alternator or starter. I would recommend scanning your computer network for possible fault codes (there should at least be codes for loss of battery power stored in some of the modules). Also, have your starting and charging systems thoroughly tested.

If you pay special attention, not only the Cruise Control light comes on, almost all of th warning lights that come on when you first turn the key to ON/RUN come on when the vehicle stalls. Based on my experience with Intrepids, I would check the Fuel Pump, I believe is quitting, it is going to take longer for the vehicle to start up (15-20min) until the pump cools off.and one day it will quit for good.
AutoZone, Checkers or similar auto parts stores lend Fuel Pressure Testers, ask the attendant for the rated pressure on your particular vehicle. The pressure is measured, after the tester is installed, by turning the Ignition Key to the ON/RUN position (do not start the engine). You may want to test several times to confirm pressure. Here is a diagram of how the tester is installed.

Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

While the engine quit and afer sittin for a short time started and went about 1 mile and engin died again. It wasn't overheating

without further diagnosis and proper testing equipment it sounds like you have a bad ignition coil or possibly a bad fuel pump. remove the fuel filler cap when this happens and listen for the fuel pump to come on when you turn the key to the run position. the fuel pump should run for 3-5 seconds. if it does the ignition coil is probably bad as the windings inside the coil can seperate when hot and reconnect when they cool again. good luck

My 2003 Pontiac Montana van is a 6cylinder the larger of the montana's and I went to start it today it made a click noise after I turned the key not while I was turning the key,and the interior lights...

Perfect example of a dead battery. When they go, they go quickly. The plates shed material very gradually over the years. When that material piles up high enough in the bottom of the battery, the battery short-circuits itself--even if it started the car just fine ten minutes prior. Jump start the engine to get home or to the auto parts store. The alternator will supply the power to keep the engine running. (Don't turn off the engine 'til you're back home!)
