Question about 2000 Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

2000 dodge intrepid driver door latch broken. When we take the door apart, there is a plastic piece that broke that attaches the handle to the rod that pulls the latch. It does not look like there is an easy way to replace the latch as it looks plastic welded on.

We purchased a door latch to replace ours from Dodge. It came with instructions as follows:

Instruction Sheet

Front Door Handle/Bezel Replacement for LH

1. Remove the front door trim panel using the procedures outlined in Section 23 of the appropriate service manual.

2. Place door trim panel on a clean work surface. Drill the mounting bosses' heat stakes, which attach the existing door handle/bezel to the panel, with a 21/64-drill bit. Take extra care to only drill in the center of each heat stake.

3. Remove existing handle/bezel from trim panel.

4. Clean the back of the trim panel of plastic fillings.

5. Seat the new handle/bezel into location.

6. Place the push nuts onto the handle/bezel bosses.

7. Use a 10 mm socket to install the push nuts all the way down on the mounting bosses to secure the handle/bezel onto the door trim panel. Using a wiggling side-to-side motion may be helpful.

8. Install the lock switch from the original handle/bezel to the new door handle/bezel.

9. Reinstall the door trim panel using the procedures outlined in Section 23 of the appropriate service manual.

Hope this helps.

Replace door handle

You must be talking about the door handle itself. The rod connects the door handle to the door latch. The plastic clip when snapped onto the rod will keep the rod from coming out of the hole in the door handle where it attaches. Is it the handle that is broke or the clip?

I have a 1997 F-250 HD. Driver door latch cable is broken at the handle end. I have a replacement cable, but need help figuring out how to remove the broken cable without breaking the plastic rod...

Door Handle/Latch Assembly NOTE: Due to the conversion from single 90-degree rod end shape to double 90-degree rod end shape, it may be necessary to remove more parts than the instructions indicate. This action will allow more maneuverability of the rod and ease the removal process.
Handle, Outside Door, Front Removal
  1. Remove the front door trim panel (23942) and front door trim shield (237A04) from the front door (20124). Refer to Section 01-05 .
  1. Disconnect the front door latch actuating rod (22152) from the handle link connector.
  1. Remove one nut and screw.
  1. Remove handle and pads from door.
----------------------
Some rods are double 90 degree rods, they require the handle or lach to be free when the rod is attached.
Some have plastic clips that slide onto the rod. they pop off sideways.

Drivers door won't open using outside latch.

The rod connecting the outside latch handle to the latch catch is disconnected. Someone will need to take the door panel off and repair the connection rod. It was a broken plastic connector that joined the rods on my 2003 Kia Optima that caused the problem.

Left drivers door will not open from inside it does open from outside how to repair

you will need to remove inner door panel, either the handle itself broke where the rod connects,or the rod fell off or broke at the door latch, or the door latch lever bent or corrodded, the outer and inner handles use the same door latch but not the same mechanisms or rods to operate the latch. Once you remove the door panel and the inner dust shield with the window up look in the bottom of door for clips or a rod or broken parts. and note latch and handle for boken or bent and missing pieces. once you start looking it all becomes self explanatory.

1992 Ford Explorer Sport. Outside door handle not

Door handle seems loose and not connected? Then the plastic clip broke inside the door. Take off the door panel, 3 screws, and door lock cap and plastic insert around inside door handle. pry around the bottom first, and go up, when you reach the top, pull up, please be carefull to not break any more plastic. you will see a squarish opening midway up the door toward the latch. reach in and pull a rod toward the opening. You see a broken piece of plastic on the tip? if so take it off and get the replacement part for it at an autoparts store, install the new one and your set. I have broke to many of these so i ended up bending the end of the rod and using a nut to hold it in.:]

My back door won't open on my 2000 tahoe

you latch mechanism could be broken or came apart, common to any vehicle.. open the cover to the back and you will see the locking mechanism, once the rear cover open you can find the latch and open it form the inside. once you get the door open you can play with the door handle by pulling on it like you opening the door and you can observed what actually connect to what to operate the latch. if small rod attached from the door handle to the lock could pop off or broken. may have to replace the handle, depend if its broken or came apart. should be 30 buck for the new handle if needed..hope that help some..good luck

2003 Ford Explorer back door latch will not open

Mine just did the exact same thing. The latch may be moving freely because it is not hooked to the latching mechanism anymore. In my case, the handle had broken where the handle hooks to the rod that operates the mechanism. Go to the Ford dealer and buy a new handle. Here in S.C. it was $24. You can't get this at the parts houses. Start by removing the plastic "Ford" cover that is over the liscense plate lights. You then have to remove the aluminum rivets that hold the handle to the tailgate from the outside and remove the broken latch. Remove the pull handle loop on the interior side of the tailgate (2 screws), unsnap the inside plastic tailgate interior panel, and pull down the black plastic sheeting that is underneath the panel to make access to the mechanism inside of the tailgate. There is also a hard plastic cover that you will see that needs to be pulled loose to open another access hole. Install the new tailgate latch handle by sliding back into the mounting holes and attach with two 10-32 screws and nuts. The new handle will come with a new yellow rod attachment piece on the handle. You will see inside of the tailgate a small rod hanging down, most likeky it will have the same rod attachment piece as the one on the new handle. Note the position of the yellow piece on the rod, as you will connect the new piece in the same place. Once the rod is hooked up, relubricate the metal mechanism with a light machine oil, replace the black plastic cover, replace the black plastic sheeting, (secure with a small amount of duct tape), replace the tailgate interior panel, replace the pull handle loop, shut tailgate, replace "Ford" cover over lights, and you're done!

Door handle

the inside handle and otside both work the release seperate.
what you need to do is take the door panel off the inside by a couple screws (usually in the arm rest) and several plastic clips
around the perimiter which will pull out when you pry out on the panel. You can do this carefully with a screw driver but the proper
fork tool from parts store will be easier. look inside door at latch
and see if your piece is broke or possibly the rod may have just come out and need to be put back in place. If your handle piece is broke it is easy to replace once your inside the door.
