What is the outside air temperature when it locks up? Summer temperatures will cause it to lock up much sooner which is normal. If this is not the case you can get a replacement fan clutch at any auto parts store

SOURCE: The fan on my 2002

For doing that you will require a tool. That tool is called j46406.This tool is used to loose or to tighten the nut. ---------- First read the procedure:---

Remove the fan hub nut from the water pump shaft in a counterclockwise rotation. Using the j46406 tool , in order to secure the water pump pulley, loosen the cooling fan hub nut from the water pump shaft.

Unclip the fan shroud from the radiator at the side panels.

Tilt the radiator and the condenser forward.

Lift the fan and the shroud up and out towards the engine to release the fan from the radiator to clear the radiator inlet.

· Remove the cooling fan and shroud
· Remove the fan clutch from the fan shroud.

· Remove the bolts retaining the fan blade to the fan clutch.

· Separate the fan blade from the fan clutch.

To order the tool to remove the nut, please click on the link below:---

If you dont have tool then other procedure is as follows:---

There is a clutch hub holding toll that you may need but try this first, use a large hammer to sharply strike the handle of the wrench toward the passenger side of the truck. Two or three sharp hits should loosen the first thread of the hub nut so that you can spin it off the rest of the way by hand. It does help to have the belt installed. Be carefull you don't strike anything else.

This will help.Keep updated.Thanks/.Helpmech.

Roaring engine noise in cab when idling. Idles at 500-950 rpm..When raising rpm in idle noise goes away.2002 GMC Envoy 6 cly.

Should idle between 500-600. Clean your throttle body with the battery disconnected to help with the fluctuation. The roaring very well could be your fan clutch. Fan clutches are a known problem with our platform. If engaged, will sound like an airplane.

Replace flan clutch and water pump and alternator but still makes a clicking noise, what can cause this problem?

A brand new out of the box fan clutch did this to me. Ticks are driving me crazy. It's probably your new fan clutch unfortunately. Mine was purchased at Autozone if this helps.

New fan clutch making clicking noise, what can cause this problem?

There is a bearing in the fan clutch and it may be faulty. check that the fan blades are not touching on the shroud . Check that the water pump bearing is good.

Hello I have 2002 envoy check engine light is on!! O riellys could not get any codes!! Engine idles and switches gears fine its just hesitant and is making a fan noise constantly like when u take off...

If the check engine light is on, there is a code, or codes, lodged in the computer's memory. Try having your vehicle scanned elsewhere. They might not have done it correctly at OReilly's.

2002 gmc envoy is over heating have changed the thermostate and the put new radiator but its still over heating any suggestions

Have the FAN CLUTCH checked. they are a common failure. Get a AC DELCO or the part from the dealer. Why was the radiator replaced? Heater work OK? A/C works OK?

02 envoy, 6 cyl, loud wooshing noise when engine is cold. fan clutch seems fully engaged. goes away when engine warms up. is this normal or does fan clutch need replaced

Fan clutches for Envoys and Trailblazer are a problem, they go out all the time.

However, it is normal for it to do this when cold, but will only stay engaged for maybe 15 seconds AFTER you've put it in gear and have started to drive. After this, it will disengage and allow the engine to warm up faster.

If you haven't already replaced the fan clutch once, you're lucky. 2002 is especially bad for the clutches, but all years don't last long. Mine lasted 90k which is pretty long.

My engine continues to idle high while driving sounding like a school bus...I was told it's the cylinder fan and now it's starts to make this squeaking noise which I too was told that was my serpentine...

Your engine cooling fan clutch is defective, have a shop look at it, the noise from the belt is caused by the huge resistance of the defective fan clutch, that is why the roar.
