Your starter drive is bad. Either replace it, or replace the starter.

My 2001 sonata makes whirring sound when attempting to start...Is this a solenoid gone bad, ignition switch, engine does not crank.

Sounds like the starter is bad. First make sure you have good battery voltage while cranking. At least 12 volts. Check cable ends.

Car died at stop light, and makes a whirring sound when I try to start it. Won't take a jump and radio comes on but headlights don't.

The whirring sound is your starter spinning. But the solenoid gear is not pushing out and connecting with the flywheel to crank the engine.

Wont start. Starter tries to engage but theres a "whirring" noise instead of the car starting

Sounds like starter solenoid is failing to kick in. The whirring is most likely the starter motor turning, but the teeth aren't engaging on the flywheel ring gear due to failed solenoid.

Engine cranks, but doesn't start on my '97 sebring. just happened. drove perfectly yesterday.

if you just filled it with gas it may be your fuel pump. believe it or not when you fill the tank sometimes the pump goes. turn the ignition to ON without cranking it and with all accesories off. Listen for a whir or humm sound-if you dont hear the sound your pump is not working.

My cheve wont crank and start well it will crank but it wont turn over and run so i can drive it it just cranks and keeps on trying but it never goes threw can anyone help me it is a 98 Chevrolet s10...

Start out by spraying a small amount of starting ether down the air cleaner. If it cranks and runs for just a few seconds at least, you probably have a fuel problem. Turn the key to "On" and listen: Do you hear a whirring noise, the fuel pump kicking in? If you do, then you need to replace your fuel filter. If not, you may have to replace the fuel pump. If the engine does not start up after the ether, you might check the distributor, make sure all the wires are plugged in. If they are, The coil may have failed.

Sounds like a battery if it just clicks once. You hardly get a whir whir out of the starter right? The lights may appear somewhat normal because they don't need much power to turn on but the starter needs LOTS of power to turn over. The average life of an alkaline battery is about 6 years.Good luck! 1979 Ford F150 4x4 auto 400 - won`t start. Thought it was NSSwitch, different switch did not help. In park and neutral it whirs (like it is getting power) but doesn`t crank starter and start. Yesterday, it...

If your starter is turning but not turning the engine over then the "bendix drive" in the starter needs to be replaced. This requires disassembly of the starter once it is off the truck. Usually the best bet is to replace the starter unless it is new in which case the bendix is probably defective.
It's a remote possibility that there may be damage to your ring gear on the flywheel, but that can be checked when you have the starter off the truck. Just look at the teeth in the starter hole and make sure none are missing or chipped or narrower than the rest. They probably are but it doesn't hurt to check. Hope this helps.
