Question about 1989 Lincoln Continental
I had to swap out the engine recently so, the car sat for 4 or 5 months and now, after the engine was replaced the transmission willNOT go into overdrive -- I get different stories from each mechanic I talk to -- one will tell me there is a Throttle Valve adjustment cable that he has tried (unsuccessfully) to adjust it while another will tell me that this transmission is shifted entirely by electronic controls through computer signals . One mechanic tells me this year had a faulty (inexpensive) "clip" that is part of the Throttle Valve adjustment and that it needs replacement but is a costly job in terms of labor another tells me that after servicing the transmission by changing the fluid and filter, I should just drive it to see if it'll correct itself and "become unstuck" The first 3 gears shift normally and smoothly -- this "not going into overdrive issue" is just since swapping out the engine... HELP PLEASE !!!
It sounds like the detent cable that allows the trany to shifts thru its shift points needs to be adjusted - the problem is the year of this car has electronic and manual shifting - so you need to look and determain this or the best bet is to take int a trany shop and let themtake a look
