SOURCE: 1997 ford probe engine fluxuates

Hi jbloco, few things can casue this problem. Basic things first. Check your ignition componants like , spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor(if applicable). If you car runs good off idle then your Idle air control valve might be bad.

Along with above, you could also have a bad coil pack firing off too.

duck tape on the air intake. I just fixed mine. There is a crack on the intake that lets too much air in when you put it in drive that makes the car stall. Try it it works.

MIGHT be the tps
The TPS is sensitive to heat, moisture and vibration leading to the failure of some units. The sensor is a sealed unit and cannot be repaired only replaced. A TPS may fail gradually leading to a number of symptoms which can include one or more of the following: -

  • Poor idle control: The TPS is used by the ECU to determine if the throttle is closed and the car should be using the Idle Air Control Valve exclusively for idle control. A fault TPS sensor can confuse the ECU causing the idle to be erratic or "hunting".
  • High Idle Speed: The TPS may report faulty values causing the engine idle speed to be increased above normal. This is normally found in conjunction with a slow engine return to idle speed symptom.
  • Slow engine return to idle: A failing TPS can report the minimum throttle position values incorrectly which can stop the engine entering idle mode when the throttle is closed. Normally when the throttle is closed the engine fuel injectors will be deactivated until a defined engine RPM speed is reached and the engine brought smoothly to idle speed. When failing a TPS will not report the throttle closed and fueling will continue causing the engine to return to idle very slowly.
  • Engine Hesitation on Throttle Application: The TPS is also used by the ECU to determine if the driver has applied the throttle quicker than the Manifold Air Pressure sensor can read. The fueling is adjusted acordingly to cope with the sudden increase in air volume, however a faulty sensor can cause the ECU to ignore this data and the engine will "hesitate" when applying the throttle. In extreme cases with the engine at idle, a sudden application of full throttle can stall the engine.
  • Engine Misfire: A fault TPS can report values outside the deined acceptable range causing the ECU to incorrectly fuel the engine. This is noticable as a slight misfire and can trigger the misfire detection software and/or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) light on the dashboard. Extreme cases can cause excessing misfires resulting in one or more cylinders being shut down to prevent engine and catalytic converter damage.
[edit] Manual recalibration In all cases a manual recalibration of the TPS may resolve the issues at least on a temporary basis. To recalibrate the TPS: -
  1. With the engine off, insert the key and turn the ignition to position 2 (On) without starting the engine.
  2. For MEMS-equipped cars (S1), quickly press and release the accelerator pedal several times (at least 5, but to be sure 8 or 9) using as much of the throttle travel as practicable. This will trigger the ECU into the closed-throttle reference learn algorithm, which has it looking for the lowest measured static throttle position (the closed position). The throttle position calibration is a fixed definition from this point.
  3. Turn the ignition off, remove the key and wait for the ECU to power down (about 30-40s).
  4. Start car as normal.

SOURCE: 94' Ford Probe Automatic Transmission fluid check question

The car needs to be running with the transmission warm, (drive around for at least 10 minutes) Place the car in neutral. Pull the stick wipe it off and place it back in the transmission. Reads just like an oil stick, want fluid in the safe range (checked pattern) area.

What would cause a 97 Ford Probe GT to idle rough and misfire at idle only Buck Run better when it's cooler outside and it also stalls when it has a rough idle

Check for any sources of unmetered air entering the engine. ( Vacuum leaks ). Check air intake hose going from air filter box to throttle assembly for any signs of splits/cracking causing a lean condition. Possible Air flow sensor dirty/defective

I need to know where the fuel filter is on a 1997 ford probe gt

The fuel filter is attached to a bracket located in the left rear of the engine compartment, next to or beneath the brake master cylinder fluid reservoir.

1990 Ford Probe 2.2 automatic stalls in forward, reverse OK

Sounds like a bad IAC (idle air control valve/sensor) that controls your idle when going from throttle to idle. If bad your idle will act crazy and can cause stalls easily. Pretty sure that's it.

Car overheats occasionally

When you drive, the cars foward movement forces air through the radiator keeping the engine temperature in check. When you are idling at a stop you need a fan to do this. There is a heat sensing unit either on the engine block or the inlet on the radiator that activates the electric fan.Sounds like it may be the electric fan or the control circuit/sensor.Ask a parts clerk at any of the parts outlets to show you a picture of the sensor and the location on the car. You may be able to short out the connector with a paper clip or wire.If the fan comes on the sensor is the problem. If it does't it will be the fan or the wiring.
