When i start my vehicle when it's cold and turn on the dfrost it does not clear the windshield

I would suspect you have the controls set for defrost, if no hot air is blowing from vents, you could have a blend door that is not functioning, switch from defrost to panel to floor and listen to hear blend door moving, if you hear the door moving...do you have hot or warm air on any other setting? if not check the antifreeze level under the hood, some vehicles can be very finicky even if a little low on antifreeze. AC is only blowing through the defrost vents in the dashboard?

I think your problem is the head unit that selects where the air comes out ie. Face, floor, defrost, or hi-level face and floor. If that's not working then it will not let you switch location that you want the air to come out.

2000 Ford Taurus SEL ac/heat blows through floor and defrost vents only

There is no vacuum to the controls. Look for a vacuum hose that is no longer connected to the engine intake manifold and repair it.

AC works fine at first then stops blowing thru dash vents and will only blow thru defrost and floor vents. this is an 02 chevy trailblazer. It this an expensive thing to fix?

It's most likely a vacuum line, look under your hood (close to the cowl panel) for a disconnected, cracked or broken vacuum line.

In some rear cases, it could be the vacuum switch (in dash). Or vacuum diaphragm (under dash).

Hope this helps you ???
