I would have suspected the same, replacing the thermostat which would be the easiest fix. Next would be the waterpump. It's a pretty easy job and you'll find several step by step videos online if you need the help. Worst case would be a bad intake or head gasket. In the case of my wife's chevy venture, the 3.4L chevy is know for that issue. Good Luck

Engine running hot

Sounds like a possible head gasket. Check oil for anti freeze in it and check to see if exhaust smells sweet or excess moisture out tail pipe. It also could be leaking external! Check to make sure the fan is workiing also when it is hot.

1997 Toyota Truck 4 Runner 4WD 3.4L EFI DOHC 6cyl, blown head gasket?

Could be a blown head gasket. You might also need to "burp" the system. When the vehicle is completely cooled down, try taking the radiator cap off, topping off fluid, and start the engine. That should help get air out. If it starts bubbling and shooting coolant out, something is wrong. You could also try running without the thermostat or just go ahead and replace it. They aren't usually expensive.

Runs hot must times not all the time.think i need a intake gasket

I don't believe replacing the intake manifold gasket is going to help with it running hot. Try replacing the Thermostat and if that fails look at your water bump and possibly low radiator fluid.

If you have water in your oil, you most likely have a blown head gasket. Shouldn't drive it until you get it fixed, that can ruin the engine. If you keep putting water in, it will keep leaking into the oil.

1997 eldorado still runs hot

Are you sure it's not air locked? Run it with the rad cap off and keep watching the water level. It might go up and down and then finally drop. Maybe even try letting some air out of one of your heater hoses if you can.

Chevy Venture Overheating

Almost sounds like the same symptons as my van. Turns out the guage was not the problem. The van was in fact running hot because the electric radiator fans were not kicking in when the engine was hot. I replaced the relay switches for the fans. There are two of these in the fuse panel under the hood. There has been no problem with overheating since
