What makes a1997 mercury sable stumble when hot idleing

I was looking under the hood, and noticed that i could hear air rushing around. I found that a vacum hose had decayed and cracked. After i replaced that, everything has been fine

My 2000 Sable starts blowing hot air about every 6 months. I mean like an oven. All I do is disconnect the battery negative terminal for about 5 minutes. After I re-connect the problem is solved. This solves many problems on this car, it just needs a re-boot. It must be powered by Microsoft (ha ha). Good luck. ps my auto headlamps never did work right either. Dave.

Sounds like a blown gasket caused by overheating. If it is, you need a torque wrench and a workshop manual to determine the head bolt settings and slackening / tightening order. You also need to get the head skimmed by an engineering shop before refitting. If the engine is running OK, you might just get away with radweld as a temporary solution.

The thermostat is in a metal housing on the engine, and the upper radiator hose attaches to it.

I would start with checking my spark plugs for signs of fouling. Beyond that, it sounds like it could possibly be a plugged catalytic converter. Do you smell rotten eggs? Sounds silly, but really!
