I have a 1996 pontiac grand am and there is a squealing noise coming from behind my passenger tire, there is a belt there and i' m almost positive it's coming from there. can you tell me what it is that is and what the belt turns. why could it be making all that noise. I was told it is the ac, but my ac doesn't work. The motor is a 3.1.
There is a good chance that the idler pulley bearing has gone bad and needs to be replaced soon as possible. If the bearing fails and seize's, your going to need to do more repairs then just replacing the idler pulley. It's a good thing to replace the belt tensioner too since the bearing in that is the same as the idler pulley and must be close to the end of it's life too. Good luck and hope this helps, Auto Zone or any other parts store will have these parts and can give you the step by step instructions to replace the parts with common tools.

You have an out of alignment belt run across the pulleys of the engine, this causes the belt to make noise as it rubs on the edge. Many times this is causes by the crankshaft vibration damper coming part and the pulley walking outward.
It sounds like a belt thats slipping. You have a sticking puley somewhere, take off the belt and rotate all of the pulleys. Usually its an AC compressor pulley so pay special attention to it. The whining noise that it makes while turning, is it the same as the squealing noise? If so it could be a problem with the pump, check the fluid level and see if its an odd color or has an odd odor (like burnt or black). Hope this helps!
squeal sounds like lose alternator belt and that would make sense if belt sliping lights will dim rear brake light probley a bulb radios dispaly may have short or just going bad
I would start with a belt. While removing it feel how much tension the tensioner has on it, on the 3800 egnine they have a stiff tensioner(sorry I don't have any specs for how much) After you get the belt off you can look at all of the pulleys and spin them to see if the bind or look for stuff stuck in the grooves on the pulleys.
It sounds to me like the belt is streched. I would not recommend one of those gator back belts, they seem to make more noise sooner than a good v notch belt. But thats just my opinion!
Located behind pasenger side rear tire.Aprox. 16 in. behind tire near tank.No need to raise car its accable on ground. There is a locking clip on the line where it meets the pressureized side thats a pain to disconnect.....
Try removing the belt and turning each pulley by hand. If everything is smooth and free, with the belt still off, drive down the block once and see if the noise is there (this will eliminate all rotating accessories on the front). If you hear the noise, then there is a problem deeper inside. Oil pressure is good? Dont' forget when doing this, you will have no power steering, so be careful.
