This is a known problem with the power steering which will probably require replacement of the power steering motor. The HHR uses an electric 12V DC motor to provide the power steering force, and they have started failing.

GM is recalling the Cobalt and other vehicles for this issue, but not yet the HHR. If you are out of warranty, you will probably be personally responsible for the cost of diagnostics and replacement.

You will probably need to contact your dealer unless you are able to replace the motor yourself. Sorry.

Does this happen(any or all) Chimes sound, Power steering fails, Tach and Speedometer erratic, Clicking noises from center console, Transmission slams into gear, Very Harsh trans up-shifts, Trans does not want to down-shift, engine stalls when when coming to a stop? DTC codes U2100 & P0700? Replacing the trans control module on mine solved all the above.

2006 ION. Why doesn't it crank or start?

It has electric power steering and there is a fault with it. The ECM recognises this and won't left you drive it.

There was a recall on it.

Only 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx, and Pontiac G6 models built between April and June 2006 are included in this recall. As with the initial recall-which included the Saturn Ion, Saturn Aura, Chevy HHR, and Chevy Cobalt-the electric power steering (EPS) in these vehicles can fail at any time while driving.Feb 17, 2015

Where do I put the power steering liquid in a chevy hhr, 2007

No fluids what so ever are consumed on any vehicle

If you have to add, you have a leak that needs attention

Your best to stop by a repair shop, that can show you
how to check things or ask a neighbor

You have to use the correct fluids in the correct places
also.

The power steer light keeps coming on n steerimg wheel gets hard on 2007 hhr..what is it??

Quite often the 60AMP maxi fuse is blown, usually from jump starting the vehicle. Check the fuse first. There are also at least 4 different technical service bulletins from Chevy relating to steering hard to turn. This model uses an electric motor at the base of the steering column for the vehicle steering. 3 out of 4, the electrical motor assembly needs replacing. A few are safety campaigns and will still be covered even if your warranty has expired. I would have it diagnosed at a GM dealer first to see if it is still covered.
