Question about 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee suddenly will not start. When I turn the key it clicks once and nothing else. The gauges and celiing light stay on continuously without flicker the battery power seems low but we changed the battery. I checked the diagnostic code by clicking the key on/off 3 times and said "done", so the problem is not one the computer can recognize. I also tried turning the key in the car door two or three times to the left the right or both to resolve any anti-theft issue. But, still no change. I also tried moving the gear shift lever back and forth between park and drive and pushing it tighter into the park position and still nothing. The battery cables are clean, the starter and solenoid connections appear fine as far as I can see.

My guess would be a short or bad connection inside the cluster. Some Chrysler products have problems with connections between the dash and body computer.

if the other light is ok and the fuel gauge is only dead, may be you have no more fuel, try to refill fuel, if the battery is also dead replace new battery.

It sounds like a loose wire to the starter, check the wiring going to the starter for any corrosion, breaks and make sure all the bolts and nuts are tight.

2000 grand cherokee V-8 stalls out

Start the engine cold and as it warms up, pull the vacuum hose off the EGR valve and see if it keeps running. If it does, replace the EGR valve. The reason the lights are all coming on and the gauges go to zero is because the engine dies and when it starts they return to normal. The EGR valve can stay stuck closed from carbon deposits which is fine for the warm up mode but it needs to open when the engine is warm or it will choke it out. This is not unusual and you will need to replace it. Look on the internet for your make and model an image of your EGR valve it will be easier than explaining it to you. They are in most cases on or connected to the intake manifold or intake plenum.*** Please rate me on this answer.***

Won't start sometimes

Hmm, sounds like starter. Next time it will not start, don't hold the key for almost a minute. Try turning the key several times if no luck, grabb a hammer and LIGHTLY tap on starter. If it turns over normally then, starter is going out.

Gauge light on and car won't start

Any symptoms?  Such as a clicking or groaning sound when you try to start it? And, which 'gauge light' is on?
If you have any kind of multimeter (they are very cheap) you should have someone turn the key while you watch the meter monitoring the battery voltage first on the posts, then on the clamps attached to it. The battery may be OK but there may be oxidation insulating the clamps from the posts and this will show up as one voltage at the posts and another, much lower, on the clamps themselves.
If it is the clamps, a cheap battery terminal brush from an auto parts store will clean both the posts and the inside of the clamps.
