99 VW Beetle Hood Release Cable plastic tab broke

The Plastic Tab on Hood Release Cable that attaches the cable to the Handle snapped I removed the plastic and the handle but can not locate the cable...do I need to replace the whole cable or just the plastic part...

I finally located the cable, it was sneaking from a whole and the metal ball was still on it...
I called VW, they say that the cable only has the metal balls on the ends... so the part must be from they handle.
They have the handle in stock, so I'll go and see if the plastic part is part of it

    Thanks

    Nik

Hood release cable broke, cant open hood

If What type of car? If e39 1997-2003 or 3 series 94-99, easy. buy small inspection mirror. look up by the latch. you'll see where the end cable connects. With a small stubby, move the plastic that the end cable attaches to, you are then moving the latch. Lift up hood. Of course you must pop out the kidney grill to gain access to the drivers side latch, 6 tabs hold it in. Hardest part of whole job is removing kidney grill. moving latch takes about 7 seconds.

At the left floor the cable that releases the hood is behind the kick panel. The plastic handle that broke off can be accessed by removing the panel and you will see the last bit of the plastic handle that is threaded on the steel rod. I an emergency you can grab the rod with pliers and pull to release the hood (bonnet). Go to you local dealer and you can order a new handle or go to a wrecking yard and find your car model and just remove and purchase the used handle. You may be able to grab the rod that the handle broke off from with out removing the panel. Good luck.

So it's about 20 degrees outside, plus a windchill that takes it down to about 5. I need to jump a dead car battery in my '99 Malibu. It is parked in my driveway at all times. Went to pull the hood release...

Hello: Sounds like your hood latch assembly might be frozen, if you have access to a hair dryer you might can thaw it out that way or maybe put an electric blanket on the hood. In-so-far as the hood cable handle go to Walmart,Auto Zone and buy the smallest cheapest vice grips and attach them to the cable and leave them there, after you get it open lubricate the latch assembly with WD-40

Handle inside will not open the hood....

I'm going to tell you how( thinking the handle inside the car broke). This handle is made of plastic(replacement handle is a dealer item, pay to much for it), and the cable behind it usually breaks at the plastic connector. you need a pair of vise grips. attach the vice grips to the cable, and pull. It will release the hood. Now if the cable itself broke going to the hood, you will have to remove the grill( is held in place by screws). Remove the grill, and you will be able to pull the release pin on the hood latch, releasing the hood. hope this helps, and please rate, helpful or not

'99 Honda civic LX. The hood latch requires a lot of force to ope

What you should do is spray the latch with pb blaster,556,or wd40.Shut the hood and after a couple of times it should work better also do a visual inspection of the latch and make sure nothing is bent.

Get a long screwdriver and try to release the secondary latch that way. Or if you have small hands reach up under the hood and pull the secondary latch toward the left.

Can't open hood

if you can still get to the little steel cable, a extremely tight pair of vise grips and a moderate amount of force will do the trick.
