I have a 2000 S40 Volvo with 101,000 miles. I have not replaced the timing belt yet. I know it is recommended earlier than this, but what is your experience?

If that belt breaks and you have an interference engine the valve can be damaged because the piston comes up and hits the valve that is left open when belt breaks

If a Volvo s40 throws its timing belt does it ruin the engine?

Only way to assess the damages is to remove the head and check

If timing belt is thrown does it kill the engine

Your S40, I'm 90% sure, is an interference design, meaning if you don't change the timing belt every 100,000 miles and let it break, yes the engine is damaged. The valves will lock in an"interference position", so when the piston reaches top dead center, it hits the valve. You have a dead engine!

Volvo s40 timing

Ignition timing is controlled by the engine management computer and is not adjustable. Valve timing is set at a fixed position when the timing belt is replaced and not adjustable.

How often does the timing belt have to be changed on a 2004 V40 1.9 4cyl?

Do it at 60,000 miles, it is cheaper than a damaged engine-Volvo had different recommendations:
All models - 1999MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner every 80,000 miles or 8 years.
1,6/1,8/2,0 - 2000-01MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
90,000 miles/8 years.
186,000 miles/16 years.
1,9T/2,0T - 2000MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
66,000 miles/6 years.
138,000 miles/12 years.
210,000 miles/18 years.
2,0T - 2001MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
90,000 miles/8 years.
186,000 miles/16 years.
All models - 2002MY : Replacement of timing belt and tensioner every 96,000 miles or 8 years.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.

My daughter just got a 2000 volvo s40. It has a 115,000 miles and the timing belt has never been changed. And, the transmission fluid is brown. Should we be concerned?

Yes, and no. The timing belt MUST BE CHANGED. It should have been changed at around 60,000miles Bad, bad things can happen if it breaks while its running. As for the tranny fluid, it has probably never been changed either so it's probably 11 years old. Just have that changed as well. Otherwise, very nice car. Good luck with it.

Does the volvo 2000 s40 have a timeing belt or timeing chain?

The 1.9 Liter has a cam belt which MUST be replaced at 105,000 miles. Also replace the water pump which is driven by the cam belt to save labor costs later one. This is an INTERFERENCE engine and as such if the belt breaks you will have serious engine damage. Therefore do not neglect this service.

How do i replace the timing belt on the volvo s40

this is a difficult job to do if you've never chaged a timing belt before, but not impossible for the novice. I recommend that you get a book for you car and follow the directions very closely. do not get your info from this site. even though there are experienced mechancs that can guide you thru it. you need that book. also if you replace the belt replace all the components of the timing system, including the water pump, if it's in there. you only want to do this one time. labor intensive

Timing belts

You need to change the timing belt at every 100,000 interval. I too own a 1999 S40 I still have 20,000km's to go however I would suggest you don't wait the 100,000, break downs are a drag. MCM
