The CV joints may have gone bad and needs to be replaced, the other thing that would cause a knocking noise is a worn out shock bushing as the wheel goes up and down there is play on the shock to the shock towers from worn out bushings. Recap, check the CV Joints for excessive play and the front shocks. You can buy shock bushings but most likely your going to need to replace the shocks if they have been in that long that the bushings are worn. Good luck and hope this helps.

Almost forgot if you have a grease gun, grease the ball joints. The ball joints on the jimmy's have lots of play too and when they start to get low on grease the play get's larger but should not make any knocking noise unless there worn and needs to be replaced. If you do have a grease gun, use marine grease, it cost not that much ore but it's thicker and repels water and moisture better then conventional grease. Keep me posted and be safe friend.

Knocking in the front driver side wheel

if the knocking is only on the drivers side when you turn to the right then it sounds like you have a drivers side front wheel bearing that needs replacing. also if the bearing is bad enough you won`t have to turn much to get the noise.

Knocking Noise from Front End Toyota Corolla 2004

Ensure the wheel nuts and Axle nuts are properly torqued to the specification. Lift up the front wheels, place supports under the car and do the following:
- Sit if front of right wheel, slightly move it right and left and feel any abnormal noise if coming out of it. If click-click or Tuck-Tuck sound is observed it could be due to the excessive play in the tie rod end, rack end, ball joint wheel bearing or U joint. Next hold the Tire with your one hand at the top and with other hand at the bottom. Shake the Tire inside out and feel any noise or play. If play is observed, it could be the worn out ball joint or the wheel bearing. Now hit the Tire at the top with rubber hammer and observe any rattling noise coming from near the center of the wheel. If you could listen to the extra noise it could be due to the dried up caliper pins. Grease the pins with graphite grease. If all is found fine, similarly check the left wheel and repair as necessary.

Knocking noise around the front passenger wheel area!?

Do you feel it in the steering wheel? if so it could be the intermediate steering shaft. If not it could be a sway bar link or bushing.

Knock in stering when turning the wheels from side to side

Possible Tie rod ends, inner or outters cause that type of noise, loose steering mount bolts in the undercarge, binding steering shaft and or binding movement of the half shaft .

Ball joints as well can make that noise, need to isolate the problem. Turn the vehicle off with the key in the ON position have someone move the wheel slightly side to side while u have your hand at the outter tie rod ends, then u will want to raise the front end up , and wiggle the wheel side to side to see if the inner tie rod ends have play or making the noise,.

Good Luck
