Question about 1987 Ford F 150

1 Answer

87 F150 sputters and stalls after driving about 20 to 30 min.

1987 F150 with dual tanks. I have had the electric fuel pump and relay replaced with no effect. I have let the truck idle for 1 to 1-1/2 hours with no problem.

Dual tanks sounds like one of them is letting air into the line. Had the same problem and when one tank was empty it would let air in to the line making the truck stall out and not start. Had to keep at least 1/2 tank in the one. Might want to change out the tank switch over.

The fuel pump may need replaced. Unfortunately most newer vehicles have an electric pump located inside the gas tank so it's not a simple job to replace the pump. Please rate this answer, thanks.

My truck has 2 gas tanks, I try to swich the tanks but it only sucks gas out of the rear tank it doesn't matter what the selecter is on what could be the problem?

I have an '87 Ford F150 just like it and have the same problem too. Most likely the front fuel tank's internal fuel pump is not working. The selector switch sends power to the fuel pump in the selected tank, which then pumps fuel to the high pressure pump mounted on the frame ahead of the dual fuel reservoir also mounted on the frame.

No, the pump is not all the way working. Pump works only when you turn ON the switch to your key and it turn OFF in 3 second to get pressure the tanks,ok.

From red light truck started sputtering and and stalled out

Hello. The GMC Sierra has an electric fuel pump so you should ensure that its fuses and relays are working before checking it. You may need to clean your fuel pump or replace it if your gas tank is not empty, but your vehicle has difficulty getting fuel. The GMC Sierra comes in a variety of styles and trim levels that can affect the replacement fuel pump you choose.

?87 F-150 5.0 stalled and won?t restart. Electric

Is the fuel pump inside the fuel tank? If, so, you could try disconnecting the wire harness at the tank, and hot-wiring the fuel pump directly to a 12 volt source, in the correct polarity of course! If the pump runs, your problem may be a fuel pump relay, or a wire problem or connector problem. If the pump does NOT run, post that info. There may be a way around the problem!

Stalls sputters, does not idle well

You need to take it in and have them clean you fuel system and fuel tank, or the problem could get worse and cost alot in the long run.
