Question about Jeep Grand Cherokee

Transmission issues (I think)

My 1994 jeep grand cherokee has an automatic transmission. Lately I've been having three problems that I believe are related:
1) occasionally, I'll start the car, go into reverse, stop, switch into drive. At this point, the engine will sound like it's trying to engage a clutch and will sometimes stop. I'll restart it and drive off without issue.
2) When I'm idling at a stop, the car will stop suddenly, again as if it's trying to engage a clutch.
3) From a stop, I'll start moving, but if feels like the 2nd gear is being used as opposed to the first gear. In about a second or two, the car will figure it out, and switch to first, then second, etc.

FYI, I'm not getting any error codes, the transmission fluid looks good, and the following parts are new (replaced in the last year): coil, cap, rotor, spark wires, radiator, water pump, belt, alternator, starter, oil and filter( a couple days ago).

Use a engine scanner to pull codes, If none it sounds like the lock-up torque converter may not be disengaging at idle. Or you have a idle air control valve or TPS going bad, then repair codes by replacing failed sensor or shift control solenoid as needed. If no codes are present your transmission could have a internal failure. It's also been know that oil transmission fluid in the system will have a higher fluid retention causing the 2nd gear solenoid to stick causing the transmission to stay in second till the line pressure rises and drops back to first with a hard shift. Keep me posted be glad to get your transmission running again

    my 94 is ok cold and takes off in any gear ok but when its warmed up sometimes it just dies when going into reverse or shudders and you gotta back up really fast or it seems to lock up and kills the engine now its startin to do thai in all drive gears. its got the 4 speed auto. and its slippin between 2nd to drive i believe. whats the problem?

1994 jeep 42re transmission shifting problem


I'm having a problem with my tranny not wanting to shift automatically at all. Seems like a dead stop its stuck in low gear. Have to manually shift and does not go into overdrive. I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Can anyone help me cause I've swiched out throttle control sensor, filter change, new tranny cooler and heavy duty lines. I'm at a loss and scratching my head. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Will a transmission out of a 95 jeep cherokee work in a 94jeep grand cherokee


As long as it is the same engine, they should swap. the main problem you would have is the electrical connectors which i do not believe change until 1996

Sorry it sounds like the transmission needs rebuilt. When it's warm, does it loose both forward and reverse?

yes...but you you have to change ALL the harnesses, computers and sensors.

additionally, there might be some alignment issues with the trans

Hello, The first thing you should do is a transmission service if you havn"t had one lately. After you"ve had one if the problem persists then most likely you will need your transmission to be raplaced or rebuilt. I hope this helped you out. TH400: The TH 400 is a heavy duty three speed automatic that was used in CJs with the BW 13-39 transfer case from 1976-1979. The TH 400 was also used in full sized Jeeps (SJs and J series pickups) from the late 60s until 1979.
T-14: he T-14 is a three speed transmission used with the "Dauntless" Buick V6 and AMC I6 from 1967 to 1975.
T-86: The T-86 is one of the three speeds used with the many CJs and Jeepster Commandos with the "Dauntless" Buick V6.
T-98: The T-98 varies only slightly from the T-18. It was used from the 50s until 1970 in different Jeeps.
T-90: The T-90 was the standard three speed for CJ and their military counterparts built from 1945 until 1971. It was also the standard transmission for Willys Wagons, Willys Pickups, FC trucks, and Jeepster/Commandos during this time period.
T-84: The T-84 is a light duty three speed used in MBs and GPWs during WWII

Use Dexron® II or ATF Plus/Type 7176 automatic transmission fluid (or their superceding fluid type).
