I've never heard of that switch. park, reverse nuetral drive and low. may be the nuetral saftey switch they are talking about. it's usually right by the transmission where the shifting cable connects.

2000 jeep grand cherokee 4.7 has a no crank no start on cold mornings

DOES IT CRANK in NEUTRAL? using fresh PRNDL contacts?
no crank, is easy to diagnose. with just one tool a voltmeter.
12.6vdc is a charged battery , rested, if lower, and not cold its discharged. so charge it or jumper cable crank engine off running donor car. easy huh?
if it cant crank it cant start, (mine can push start or gravity start)
battery cable lugs clean and tight x4 ends? green corrosion?

we then hot wire. the starter solenoid, next. (using old screwdriver as jumper bar)
it cranks now (good starter ) all in 5min work !
it does not crank bad starter.

so it cranks hot wired. good.
so next what is next, easy the KEY line.
the key line runs form the starter to the PRNDL switch and then the KEY switch (crank Start line)
if the car has SKIM immobilizer it cuts fuel not spark.

so i check for 12vdc into PRNDL cranking then key is ok.
if got 12vdc in to PRNLD but not out cranking the switch is bad.
or maladjusted?
its that simple ,with any 10buck DMM off walfarts shelf.

if car is hacked or alarms spliced in, we cant fix it here, its not stock.
same with remote start hack jobs.

Key wont crank engine but crossing the starter it will crank

best post ever, for this failure. you win a prize !
that means the KEY line is dead.
that tiny wire on solenoid is a KEY line.
and can be interupted many a way
the car has autotmatic, the PRNDL switch failure. (try cranking in neutral)
i dont think any 91 has anyd immobilizers but some have alarms that cut this line.
i looked at your schematic. (no engine stated)
but the one engine has the very odd starter solenoid.
4 lugs, not 3 like normal
the key switch powers one side of solenoid coil
and the clutch or PRNDL switch grounds the other side. brown-yellow wire. if the PRNDL is bad, park or N location its bad.
try neutral and wiggle the shifter in both spots all A/T cars.

2004 Chrysler Sebring. How do I check to see if the neutral safety switch is bad.

The switch is called a PRNDL switch and is located on top of the valve body, inside the transmission.

Starter will not engage

check all fuses. there are many for this circuit.
fuse 2 and 20 must be good.

no ! this is not and ASD function.
the starter is totally independent, (the EFI does not run the starter)

my wild guess is this as A/T slush pump car.
so as such has the PRNDL switch.
even IMMO unhappy allows cranking but cuts fuel and spark. via ASD

the Key switch sends 12vdc to the PRNDL
you try park or neutral.
you wiggle it, omg it cranks. PRNDL death deal (1million served)
this car has a starter RELAY, simple
12v to 2 pins, key on.
the PRNDL grounds the coil the relay closes, and the output 12v
goes to the starter solenoid.
there is no need to guess the FSM is here, read starting and schematics. bingo

see 8w-21-1 , the simple path there.

if the fuses are good
and you have 12vdc across the relay coil the PRNDL is good.
if the 12v is missing the PRNDL is bad.
assumes the ground to the PRNDL i good.

see 8 ways to crank here ,tricks, M/T rule on cranks....2 ways.

i just hot wire the starter solenoid and that cuts the problem in half
at the get go.... no fiddling about.
it already failed jump starts. and battery is good and charged, so..
hot wire it. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, ok starter is good.
but key line is dead.. 1/2 the work is gone. fail path know.

Does not start in park

wrong, it dont crank in park.
no car starts (A/T) unless it cranks first.

bad PRNDL switch on side of tranny is bad.
get a new one.

or start in neutral till that contact fails.

Backup lights out bulbs ok

its just 2 parts , not counting wires, fuse or dead battery.
car runs? Head lights work? at same time?

the switch is bad.
or the bulbs are bad.
the A/T car (auto not stick)
the PRNDL prindle switch does this.
did you try wiggle the lever in REV. with person 2 behind you watching.
did the lamps flash,? bingo bad PRNDL.

with a Volt meter, any (1920 to now) you check the voltage
at the PRNDL, , 12v in , and
0v out , in reverse is bad switch.
1-10v out is a short in the line, (less that 11volts is a short)
12v out is good, your lamps are bad, unplugged . or cut.
top hard fail here is some hack job (uhaul infamous) cut the wires all
up and used wire nuts (illegal on cars) an fails hard.

2010 ford edge starts intermittently. Replaced battery - doesn't try to crank - just nothing.

Problem with 1998 Honda Accord 2010 ford edge starts intermittently. Replaced no crank is
1: a weak battery (try different good one, or jumper cable it)
2: bad cables or conn. from battery to starter.
3: bad starter.
4: bad key line (alarm cut, PRNDL switch open, bad ignition switch.
Five minutes with any voltmeter finds this easy.
or or hot wire the starter solenoid, to cut the problem in 1/2
this proves problem is in starter or battery
or in Key line, in 5 min flat, (a 100 year old test )

there are very simple tests for each of the 4. ask.

I would check the neutral safety switch. It's located on the shift shaft of the transmission and is known to go bad
