One headlight shuts off then works again when I flip switch

When I am driving my passenger headlight will just shut off. If I turn the headlight switch off and then back on it comes back on. After a while it will just turn off again.

Why would a bulb just not work then work. In my experience that does not happen with light bulbs. Simply saying, "change the bulb" is not a good enough answer when the bulbs on these cars cost $100.

If the connection is not snug then why would it come on by turning the switch off then back on?

So far, unfortunately everyone is wrong. Both lights started doing it. I replaced a ballast and that did not work (didn't think it would because they were both going out). At this point I was going to replace both bulbs but the lenses were looking pretty bad too so I went ahead and bought entirely brand new light assemblies. They look great. I got them for a deal and they came with all new bulbs. They are aftermarket and look much better than the stock lights. Only bad thing,,,problem still exists. So now I have ordered a new headlamp relay. This is the simplest thing that is common to both lights. If it is not the relay than it must be the battery or alternator but my fingers are crossed. if it is the relay than problem could have been solved for $20 but the new lights are so bright, clear, and eye catchy. I will update when I get this solved.

This was not written by a Lexus owner. Wire connections rarely get lose on Lexus' and a lose wire would have very different effects on a car with a ballast and xenon gas lamp.

I own a 2008 is350 and i am having the same exact problem the light goes on for about 30 seoncds then shuts off and if u flick the switch it come sback for 30 more seconds i made an appointment with lexus but after reading the forums (clublexus and my.is) i have found others with the same problem, it is either a bad bulb but most likely a bad ballast, i have a warrenty still but if yours has expired the dealer can charge anywhere from $500 for the ballast and up to $1800 on my car for a head light i believe your headlight is about $1300 at the dealer but you can find ballasts or complete headlight assemblies on ebay for much cheaper

It's the Ballast. You have to pull the front bumper off to get at it. It's about $100 for the part. Good luck

My HID low beam did the same thing on my '01 IS300. Then, about 2 months later went out completely. Might be time to "invest" in a new bulb.

I had the same problem with my '01 is300..turns out the HID ballast was going..i replaced it and it's as good as new..although the ballast is pricey..a temp solution that worked for me is, when it goes out, pull over and turn the headlights off..wait about a minute and turn it back on..should be fine after that..worked for me everytime

First check the wire connection at that bulb, make sure it's snug. if that dosen't do it, change the bulb.

Headlight relay located

What year expedition ? The head lamps are controlled by a module (electronic module ) VSM- vehicle security module or SJB - smart junction box on newer expeditions . The module received a input from a shorted switch or light sensor or something of that nature . Having a professional type scan tool hooked up ,checking codes in the GEM or SJB would be the first step . Or you could find wiring diagrams for the inputs to the module , take your vehicle apart an test the circuits with a volt meter . You can find wiring diagrams at www.bbbind.com .

Some problems with the ignition switches are pretty common with GM cars and trucks. With the key in the 'on' position, jiggle the key around and see if you get some erratic gauge operation or a shut-down.

Check the delay switch for your headlights. It may be shorting out and simply need replaced. Not cheap, but not all that expensive considering other repairs.
