Im changing the thermostat and was told i need to put silicone around the thermostat when i replace it is that true?

Yes that is the recommended sealant, ford grey silicone is the recommended type.

drain coolant until its below the thermostat.then remove two thermostat housing bolts.remove thermostat housing and thermostat.make note position of thermostat before removing it.then carefully clean all old gasket material from thermostat housing and cylinder block you can buy can gasket remover at any auto parts stores.buy new thermostat gasket.if you have the paper type you need to buy RTV SILICONE to help seal gasket if you have rubber type gasket you dont need RTV SILICONE.make sure both surfaces are clean.then install new thermostat and new gasket.if you have paper type gasket apply thin 1/16 coat RTV SILICONE both sides thermostat gasket.then install gasket to thermostat housing then install housing to cylinder block first make sure new thermostat in place before installing thermostat housing. let RTV silicone sit up about hour before adding coolant.IF THERMOSTAT HAS THE O RING SEAL DONT NEED RTV SILICONE AND THE PAPER GASKET.

How do you change the thermostat on a 2004 grand


Is it malfunctioning? If so when you replace it, make sure you get one that is rated for fail safe (if it fails, it stays open. First you need to drain the coolant, then diconnect the hose clamp of the big black rubber hose going into the thermostat. (the hose is on the right hand side of the engine as your looking at it) then remove the bolts holding the thermostat down. Pull the old thermostat out, clean off any gasket residue off, ensuring not to get any into the engine. Don't use the premade gaskets, as they fail rather easily. Use a hig-temp silicone RTV, and put a constant bead around it, while circling the bolt holes as well. Put the new unit in, and tighten the bolts. some RTV should seep out a little bit. When you make your gasket, dont use to much, an 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick is fine. Let it cure overnight. Replace the hose, then refill the coolant. Good Luck.

It needs to sit in a recess in the housing, typically if you are asking the question that you are asking, the thermostat housing may be bent or cracked. If it is nto installed correctly, it kills the housing...Must be perfectly true, and sqaure....

I am not sure about the gasket, if it came with, use it, some designs use o ring to seat the thermostat, others use o ring as seal...

i normally seal it anyways...

How do i change the thermastat in a 1991 ford explorer. i hope i dont need a new radiator??


locate the hose that goes to the top of the radiator that hose leads to the thermostat, remove the hose, at the engine there is a water neck be careful as it is rather old and may have rust and is prone to break, remove the 2 screws that hold it in place, remove the water neck (thermostat housing) and remove the old termostat, scrap the housing and engine block from old gasket and silicone, add silicone to the housing and place thermostat in housing in circular ridge then place the gasket over the thermostat apply more silicon over the gasket and spread evenly, allow the silicone to set for a couple of mins and then put the housing back with the engine then connect the hose back and your all set; remember the thermostat part that goes into the engine should be the part with the spring, hope that helps

some rubber seals will fit around the edge of the thermostat and the the thermostat goes. No gasket is need for housing you can use grey silicone to eal. good luck and thanks for using FIX YA

How do i change the thermostat on my 1992 honda accord?


The thermostat is located on the engine block on the left side when facing the car with the hood open. It is under the small metal coolant housing that connects to the water hose. There are two bolts, both 10 mm (I swear that half of a Honda can be taken apart with a 10 mm wrench!) that must be removed completely and then the little metal housing can be 'popped' off. I'd suggest you take the coolant hose off first as it is easier to work.
I suggest you change the thermostat every two years as they are cheap and easily replaced. If one seizes up, you may 'cook' the engine and that usually means the car is done. Not a very smart thing to do when the work takes about fifteen minutes and the part is less than twenty dollars. Also, the coolant MUST be changed every two years as the lubricants and special additives wear out. Some people go through the nonsense of putting the thermostat in hot water and watching if it closes or not. I say, why diddle around and hope that you get it right.
Also, make sure you put a new gasket on the thermostat against the engine block as it needs to seal completely. I usually use 'form a gasket' silicone on both sides of the thermostat rim to make sure. Hope it helps.

I'm going to assume that you have a 4.0 L6 (inline 6) engine) since that's the most common one. If not, most of instructions are the same. 1. With engine cool, or, pressure out of system, radiator cap off, remove both hoses from thermostat housing (top radiator hose connects directly to housing on front of engine). 2. carefully scrape all gasket material from housing and block. Make note of how the thermostat was installed (end with spring goes into the engine block). Since installation is vertical, I usually use silicone glue on gasket, installing thermostat into housing first, then applying gasket to housing, so that it will hold the stat in place when installing to block. (let glue dry for a while). 3. Put a thin film of silicone on engine side of gasket, position assembly on block and put in the easiest to access bolt, finger tight. Be careful not to move assembly around too much or you may cause the thermostat to go out of position. Put in the second bolt, again, finger tight. When both bolts are installed, tighten each, going back and forth, taking up tension equally (don't tighten one, then the other one all at once). 4. replace both hoses, fill to replace any coolant lost (usually not very much). Start engine and run with cap off radiator and heater full "on". Watch temp gauge.When up to operating temp, add more coolant if necessary. (also monitor radiator during this stage for overflow or overheating. it is sometimes necessary to intermittently add some coolant while engine is coming up to temp. as some overflow is normal). 5. close cap and run for several more minutes. Check hoses and therm gasket for seepage. Some re-tightening may be necessary, but if excessive you may have made a mistake you should not have to "crank down" really hard on any hose clamp or fastener. PS, I usually remove and replace spring type hose clamps with screw type. They are more reliable and easier to work with!

Check engine light--dealer says it's the thermostat


It's not the t-stat they read the code wrong go to checker or any auto parts store and use one of there code readers, I had a shop tell me the same thing. the codes are right next to each other Also you don't need to remove engine to do this job you just take off the alternator it's right under. My shop quoted me $300 for a $25 dollar part

Follow the top radiator hose to the engine it will lead to a housing that is bolted on the block the thermostat is inside that housing case You will need to remove the case take out the thermostat clean the old gasket awy from the block and housing case before you replace the new thermostat and gasket its always a good idea to put a light coating of silicone sealer around the housing where it fits together before you put it back on
