2008 dodge avenger stuck in park but cluster reads neutral

First thing to do is check and see if the brake lights work, the brake lights power the release solenoid so you can move the gear selector from part to the desired gear.

2001 Monte Carlo wont start shift cable issue

Don't know about needing the brake pedal pushed to get INTO park, but it might, as the pedal needs to be pressed to get it OUT of park.

My dodge durango 2001 is saying brake p !

Thats is the light for your parking brake, it could be as simple as the brake has been slightly engaged. i.e. it was accidently pressed down just enough to turn the light on, but not engage the brake, getting in or out of the durango. It could aslo be signaling that there is a problem with the parking or emergency brake. In most cases the Emergency/Parking brake is in the rear rotors. If your mechanicly inclined that would be a good place to start if you have never done rear brakes yet feel confident enough to try it i would recommend getting a haynes or chiltens manual . If all else fails and you cant find anything wrong take it to a reputable brake shop, Brakes are the one thing on your vehicle you dont want to "hope" it fixes itself or leave to chance.

My 2001 dodge durango will run, but once i park it it wont start again. If i play around with the shifter the truck will start, What is wrong with it?

Is this an Automatic transmission? If it is, and what is happening is that when you turn the key the starter will not engage, then you play with the shifter nob, and then it will start, then it is the
NUETRAL SAFETY SWITCH.

This is there to ensure that you cannot start the car in a gear, and will only start in either Park, or Nuetral. They go bad, just like anything else. Try starting the car with the gear-shifter in the NUETRAL position. I bet it will start.

Where the switch is located on this car, I am not sure, but it is not an expensive fix.

How much fluid does the auto trans take in a 2001 dodge durango 4wd take

Welcome to FixYa.

My spec. reference indicates 5 quarts.

To check your fluid level;

To do this you must run the vehicle for at least 15 minutes, place the shifter in all area's one at a time for 5 seconds each from park all the way down to low 1, then all the way back up to park, 5 seconds in each gear then slowly return it to the neutral position, engage the parking brake, then check the fluid level while the D is running. You will need to wipe and check it a couple of times to get the actual level.

STUCK IN PARK

really could use more info. what kind of dodge? what year? taking a stab in the dark here. newer dodges have an interlock that engages when you put it in park. keeps little kids from taking it out of park. if this is a newer vehicle then either the inter lock on the gear shift is bad, the fuse has blown for it or the stop lite switch on the brake pedal is bad hope this helps

Check the brake switch sensor near the brake pedal (or on the lever) to make sure that it is engaging.

Gear shift is stuck in park I have a similar problem. I have a 2004 dodge durango. It will start up fine, but it won't shift into reverse or drive. It usually takes up to 15 minutes sometimes to get it...

there is a release on the brake pedal that lets the transmission shift out of park you should hear it click when you put your foot on the brake

Transfer case wont engage

shift into 4wd and move truck a couple of feet.
if light is still off, park truck block the wheels set the park brake jack right front wheel and try to hand spin the wheel if wheel doesn't turn 4x4 is functioning properly but there is a wiring problem use an ohmmeter to check the 4x4 switch wiring fuse and bulb
if wheel turns freely the front axle or transfer case is not engaged
attempt to hand spin the front driveshft if the driveshaft will spin the transfer case is not engaged check the transfer case shift linkage, problem is in linkage or transfer case internals
if the driveshaft will not spin the transfer case is engaged properly
with trnsmission in neutral or park start engine measure vacuum on the two vac lines at front axle shift motor . one line should have approx 20" vacuum. other line should have none
if no vacuum measured look for vac leak or bad vac switch
if both lines have vac look for a bad vac swithc or ruptured cad actuator diaphragm
if one line has 20" +- VAC
move transfer case lever to 2wd measure vac again lines should have swapped vac signals
if no vac switch bad or 4wd shift likage needs adjusting
if yes vac motor bad or stuck or shift fork stuck
remove vac shift motor from the axle attach vac lines to shift motor engage disengage 4wd
does shift motor plunger move at least 1/2 inch
no shift motor bad
yes check axle shift fork and vac motor for binging
