Question about 1995 Mazda Protege

1 Answer

Yesterday, just after filling my tank, the fuel gauge showed empty and the warning light came on. After a few hours the gauge went up to about half and then very slowly ( over about 15 minutes ) went up to full. I drove about 300 miles yesterday and the gauge went down very slowly, never going below half.

There can be only one issue.
Check the float in the gas tank as it may have failed allowing gas inside and is not "floating" anymore. Or, the sending unit needs replacing.

Town and Country Van running out of gas and guage says half a tank what could be the problem?

If your fuel gauge is showing you in accurate readings this is normal to all vehicles that are not used to fill-up gas full regularly but sometimes the cause of the inacuracy is due to faulty float valve in the gas tank you need to replace it

Fuel gage showing half a tank but trip computer only registering 60 miles left

Its very simple. If the gauge is showing half full then fill the tank and see how much fuel it takes. If the amount you add is approximately 50 percent of the fuel tank capacity then you know the fuel gauge is accurate . In that case the computer is giving an inaccurate reading and should be ignored. All you need is an accurate fuel gauge - it does not matter a row of beans what the computer says if the fuel gauge is reading correctly.

worth checking the fuel tank for holes or there might be some fuel delivery pipes leaking badly. Or it might be an O2 sensor not giving correct signal to ecu thus consuming so much fuel.

i would check wires leading to tank sounds like you have a bad connection or possiably a bad ground wire if connection s look good and your getting good ground more than likely you have a bad sending unit in the tank

GAS GAUGE SHOWS EMPTY AND THE WARNING LIGHT IS ON

I suspect either the sensor was not reconnected (or may have been damaged) when you put eveything back together or the float has sunk. Either way, you will have to do the job over to fix it.

Gas gauge started at full a few days later at half a tank the a few days later empty and its staying empty

Hi, if you have fuel in the tank and the gauge is still reading empty then you problem is going to be with the fuel sender in the top of the tank.

The problem you have got is that the tank is going to have to come out to fit the new sender unit.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Fuel tank warning lights - shows empty although full unable to determine when need fill-up

Have a look at the fuel gauge wire, where it is connected on to wiring at the top off the fuel tank. It may be corroded.

Could be either a failing gauge or a failing sending unit on the fuel pump. Check out this blog post about a similar problem in Trailblazers - http://drspeedometer.com/chevy-trailblazer-fuel-gauge-quit-working-top-2-reasons-why
