Question about 1996 Nissan Pickup

Sounds like a loose nut behind airbag on steering column!

The rattle is increasing...especially when I turn or go over bumps! For a long time, I thought it might be my key ring. But I have taken my key off the ring and still the rattle. It sounds just as if there is a loose nut rolling around in there behind the airbag module.
How do I remove the airbag (without deploying it) and what special tools will I need to have?

You disconnect both the negitive and positive battery posts and pull the flaps off the side of the air bag covers,the pry off with a screw driver, you need a 3 8 security tork wrench to get the two bolts off next the air bag will come out and you will see a yellow wire disconnect it from the air bag then your free to look for whats loose without deploying the bag, now that I have given you the anser please rate it so I can keep my score up, if more people keep not rating I will not answer any more of these questions for free.

Airbag light is on horn is not working what to do


Hi, odds are your clockspring has broken. You'll have to remove the steering wheel to access the clockspring, which will require the use of a steering wheel puller. I have pasted procedures below from autozone.com. After removing the airbag and before removing the steering wheel, you can verify that the clockspring has failed, if desired, by testing the continuity of the wires from the airbag to the bottom of the steering column. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for using FixYa.
Removal & Installation CAUTION The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary SIR system repairs and/or personal injury.

1. Make sure the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

2. Turn the ignition key cylinder to the LOCK position and remove the key. Turn the steering wheel a half turn toward the left until the steering column becomes locked in position.

3. Remove the 3 bolts attaching the air bag module to the steering wheel. Remove the air bag module.


CAUTION Disconnect and isolate the negative (ground) battery cable. Allow the system capacitor to discharge for at least 2 minutes before continuing with the removal procedure. This will disable the air bag system.

4. Disconnect the wiring connectors from the air bag module, horn switch and speed control switches.

5. Remove the routing clip for the wiring harness from the air bag module studs.

6. Remove the steering wheel mounting nut from the steering column shaft and remove the steering wheel damper from the steering wheel.

7. Using a steering wheel puller tool, remove the steering wheel from the steering column shaft. Do not thread the steering wheel puller tool bolts into the steering wheel more than a 1/2 in. or damage to the SRS clockspring will result. Do not hammer or bump the steering column or shaft when removing the steering wheel
8. Remove and replace the clockspring.

To install:
1. Before installing the steering wheel, the clockspring must be centered . Center the clockspring as follows:
a. Disengage the lock mechanism by depressing the 2 plastic locking pins.

b. Turn the clockspring rotor clockwise until it stops, while the lock mechanism is disengaged. Do not use excessive force.

c. From the end of the clockwise travel, turn the clockspring rotor counter-clockwise. The clockspring wires should be at the top. Engage the clockspring locking pins.

d. Turn the clockspring a 1/2 additional rotation counter-clockwise from the center locked position. This should put the clockspring wiring at the bottom.

e. The clockspring is now correctly positioned for installation of the steering wheel.


2. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column shaft. Make sure the master splines of the steering wheel and steering shaft are in correct alignment. Be sure the flats on the steering wheel align with the formations on the clockspring. All wiring leads from the clockspring must be routed correctly.

3. Install the steering wheel damper onto the steering wheel in its original position.

4.Install the steering wheel-to-steering shaft retaining nut. Torque the retaining nut to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).

5. Reconnect the horn switch wiring lead from the clockspring, onto the steering wheel horn switch wiring.

6. If equipped with speed control, reconnect the speed control wiring from the clockspring onto the speed control switch.

7. Install the wiring lead from the clockspring onto the air bag module. Make the wiring connection onto the air bag module, by pressing straight in on the connector. Be sure it is fully seated.

8. Install the air bag module to the steering wheel and then install the 3 air bag module attaching nuts. Torque all 3 air bag module attaching nuts to 100 inch lbs. (11 Nm).

9. When reconnecting the battery on a vehicle that has had the air bag removed, the following procedure should be used:
a. Connect the DRB or equivalent scan tool, to the ASDM diagnostic 6-way connector.
b. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Exit the vehicle with the DRB, and install the latest version of the proper diagnostic cartridge into the DRB.
c. Make sure there are no occupants in the vehicle and reconnect the negative battery cable.
d. Using the DRB, read and record active or stored fault codes. Take appropriate actions to correct any faults.
e. Erase stored fault codes. If problems remain, fault codes will not erase.
f. From the passenger side of the vehicle, turn the ignition key to OFF and then ON , observing the instrument cluster air bag lamp. It should go ON for 6-8 seconds, then go out. This will indicate that the air bag system is functioning normally.


WARNING If the air bag warning lamp fails to light, blinks ON and OFF or goes ON and stays ON, there is an air bag system malfunction.

Test the operation of any steering column functions such as the horn, lights or speed control system.

Road test vehicle. Be sure the speed control and steering systems are functioning properly

All my guages started going haywire anytime I would hit a bump. Airbag, message center, ABS/Brake lights, and speedometer would all go nuts anytime I hit a bump. Now none of them come on so I'm guessing...


when multiple systems fail its usually a ground problem, and they are hard ro find, the battery grounds to the engine and the engine to the body, that is where you start, i carry lenghts of wire with alligator clips and branch grounds on units, especially the steering column

A headset wire stuck (wound) in crack of steering column in 1998 Contour. How do we retrieve it? Can the wheel be dismantled?


Yes - the steering wheel can be removed, just be prepared for the wire to be smashed or mangles and unusable. Look on the back side of the steering wheel - you will see some small holes for the retaining screws for the center piece of the steering wheel. If your model has an airbag in the wheel you will need to disconnect the battery to prevent activating the airbag.Remove the panel below the steering wheel to access the harness for the airbag and unplug. Now remove those retaining screws and the center piece of the wheel. Now you will see a large nut on the center shaft of the column.Before you remove the center nut, look at how many threads are exposed above the nut before removing. Lock the steering wheel and remove that nut. Now you will need a steering wheel puller. Find the fasteners that fit your wheel and mount the puller, Turn the puller shaft 3 turns and try to remove wire - if it won't come out then you'll need to completely remove the wheel to extract the wire. Place the wheel back on the column shaft and use that center nut to re - install the steering wheel. You may need to place that nut socket over the shaft around the threaded part and tap lightly to seat the wheel far enough to use the nut to seat the wheel back down. Press steering wheel until it sits where it did in the beginning. Re - install center piece, plug in airbag and replace that lower panel. Your local auto parts store may have a steering wheel puller for rent - if not, they are not expensive to buy ( should be less than $10.00 USD).

2005 Equinox feels like steering wheel is loose when going over bumps


It is common for the front sway bar links to wear out. This can cause a sense of looseness, with a slight rattle in the suspension when going over bumps, or when making turns. They cost about $60 a pair at auto supply stores, and can be changed in about 1 hour. There was also a GM technical service bullitin on this vehicle in regards to the steering column which is also a possibility, as well as one regarding loud knocking sounds related to the front strut spring cups.

A rattle inside the steering wheel.


i would imagine the spring clip for the horn may be loose, or floating around in there, since you shouldnt have even touched the turn signal or any components there, i would definatlysay thats the problem, as far as the air bag, make sure to disconnect the battery and it should be ok, but work with it at your own risk

Rattleing front end and Airbag on/off


You have two separate problems. The noise in the front is possibly the sway bar bushings, there was a problem with them on the dakota, durango and caravans. The airbag light problem is probably the clockspring. It is behind the steering wheel.

Best thing to do, honestly, is to purchase a chilton's or haynes manual when you are working around the air bags. Better safe than sorry.

it could be the wiring rattled loose or a nut or a screw has come loose inside the steering column, you might be able to get at it by loosening the plastic at the bottom of the dash below the steering column. or the worst thing could be something has broke loose..

Replace original steering wheel

If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. When the light is on (or the tone is sounding), the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident. The flashing light on your car is telling the answer you need. On some vehicles, the light is flashing a two digit code. Once you know the code, you can most likely repair it yourself. There are fairly easy procedures that most people are capable of repairing.
