Question about 1998 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

My 98 dodge caravan has a loss of power and dies when stopping

My van started to tug a bit at first, then it started slipping or missing when I tried to accelerate. Now I can't run the AC and drive or it will die out. The fuel gauge doesn't work right at 1/8 of a tank and lower, but notice it isn't tugging at the engine so much when the gas tank is fuller. I also noticed sometimes after it dies out the cruise control light is on??? I was thinking maybe fuel filter? If so where is the fuel filter located on a 3.3 liter 98 dodge caravan? Under the hood, or inside the gas tank and last idea I had was next to the tank by the rear wheel??? Please let me know.

Filter is mounted directly above the pump module on top of the fuel tank. You may have to drop it down a little bit to change it. Also check the fuel pressure with a good gauge while it's running poorly and see if it's out of spec.

VAN SOUNDS LIKE ITS TRYING TO START AFTER I SHUT IT OFF

this is what we call "dieseling"
it is the engine running WITHOUT spark plugs

This happens when you have leaking injectors and carbon build up in the engine (pistons/valves)

try shutting off the engine while in park
keep your foot on the brake because you might find the engine has enough power to actually move the van

keep us posted

My led on caravan ac &rec flash how do ifix it

it is flashing because you have had power loss of some kind. so you will have to recalibrate the unit. start by warming the van up for about 5 minutes. leave it running, then press and hold the bottom left and bottom right buttons together till they start to flash.
(they will flash different then they are now)

once they flash let go of the buttons and wait untill they stop flashing.

then turn van off. wait 5 seconds and then start van again. Now press and hold the bottom left and top left buttons together untill it flashes.

once the flashing stops then press top left button and you should be complete. :)

My 1998 Dodge caravan started missing and chugging when accelerating. Now at stops it is dying out and when it does the cruise control light is on. I had the fuel pump changed, fuel filter, changed the oil...

Catalytic converter sounds plugged up. The popping back through the throttle body kind of gives me that suspicion. EGR valve stuck open could give that too, but I would think either one of these would throw a computer code.

Something is draining the battery; alternator checks ok; new batt

if you can get the car started while it is running take the positive side of the battery cable off if it dies then it is the alternator if it does not die check the drive belt to see if it is loose or slipping
