Question about 1983 Toyota Cressida

1 Answer

Dad replaced the headgasket on my '83 Toyota

Dad replaced the headgasket (which was blown) on my '83 Toyota Cressida and but now it won't start. The engine will turn over but all the lights on the dashboard come one when you turn on the key. When I try to start it for the first time it did actually start for a couple of seconds but then wouldn't keep going and it won't do it again.

You have a blown head gasket that needs to be replaced. The head may be warped too so it's not an easy job to do without the proper tools and parts.

My father's 1987 Toyota Cressida won't start when the weather is hot. Otherwise it works.

When I get a problem like that, I usually start with replacing the fuel filter and checking the fuel pump pressure. But most of the time, it ends up being a crack in the plastic coil or distributor cap that is wider when it is hot than when it is cold.

Fuel filter location for 1983 Cressida

Hello George. Just saw this post and thought I'd answer even though you probably already solved it. I had an 83 with manual tranny--loved that car. I replace the filter twice. It is right under the driver's side floorboard tucked up tight next to the outer frame rail as it inclines up toward the firewall. Hard to work on. David

83 hood match

Toyota Cressida's 1981 - 1984 body style was the same. The 81 thru 84 was the 2nd generation. A likely match !
