Could be the starter relay but , could also be the park neutral safety switch , test by moving the gear selector to neutral . If it starts then more then likely the PNP switch is bad . Viewing wiring diagrams to see what all is involved in starter operation . Reading factory service info. for starter operation would be good too . The engine computer (PCM/ECM) probably energizes the starter relay . Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free-tsb Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine . Under system click on engine , then under subsystem click on starting . Click the search button , then the blue link . Looking at the wiring diagram it just so happens there is no starter relay . Ignition switch sends battery voltage through the PNP directly to the starter solenoid . Could be the main battery cable , voltage drop testing will show if that is the problem . Starter Voltage Drop
as youre facing the engine the starter is on the drivers side located under the exhaust manifold. if you trace your positive (red) battery cable it leads you right to it.
Raise the front of the car then slide under the driver's side of the car and locate the starter on the engine
where it meets the bell housing. Unplug the "S" connector from the
terminal on the starter and lay it aside. Remove the nut from the "B"
terminal with a wrench, then remove the battery cable from the starter. Locate the mounting bolts and loosen it. Slide the new starter then tighten the bolts.
The oil filter is located in the front side of the engine,right above the oil pan in the side of the engine block,If you use oil filter pliers be careful not to touch the positive lead to the starter.
define trying to catch. is the engune turning over but sounding like it may start then finally does? or does the starter spin but the engine is not turning unless you turn the key to start a few times if it is the latter it could very well be the starter. check to see if you have an oil leak onto the starter. if it very greasey then you will need to adress the oil leak too. the starter is located on the lower right side of the engine. (passanger side.)
